Moltres (Japanese: ファイヤー, HepburnFaiyaa) (MOL-trays[1]) is a Fire/Flying-type Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It is part of the Kanto Legendary Birds, along with Articuno and Zapdos. In Generation VIII, exclusive to the Crown Tundra, Moltres has a Galarian Form that is a Dark/Flying type.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Kantonian[]

Moltres is a large, avian Pokémon with golden plumage similar to that of the Phoenix. It has a long, flowing head crest and a billowing tail, both made of reddish-orange and yellow flames. Additionally, its wings are also shrouded in fiery plumage. It has a long, thin neck, a pointed, brown beak, and small, triangular eyes. Its thin, brown legs have feet that have three forward facing toes and one backward facing toe. It has short talons.

Galarian[]

Galarian Moltres is a large, avian Pokémon with red and black plumage. It has a long, flowing head crest and a billowing tail, both made of reddish-pink and yellow flames. Additionally, its wings are also shrouded in fiery plumage. It has a long, thin neck, a short, red beak, and small, blue triangular eyes. Its thin, red legs have feet that have three forward facing toes and one backward facing toe. It has short talons.

Behavior[]

Kantonian[]

Moltres sheds embers with every flap of its wings, creating a brilliant flash of flames. By dipping itself into the magma of an active volcano, this Pokémon can heal itself. It migrates to the south with the coming of spring and is said to bring an early springtime to cold lands. However, it is rarely seen in normal occasions.

Galarian[]

Once every several decades, this migratory Pokémon appears in the Crown Tundra. For a long time, it was thought to be the same Legendary Pokémon as the Moltres previously discovered in other regions. It has a haughty personality and conducts itself calmly, according to its own whims. It exudes the energy churning within its body as an aura akin to a column of raging fire, leaving ordinary Pokémon unable to even approach it. It is especially skilled at attacking opponents' minds by spreading its wings wide and unleashing a wicked aura. Opponents hit by such attacks are overcome with deep fatigue, as if all their energy has been burned away.

Natural Abilities[]

Kantonian[]

It can control fire at its own will.

Galarian[]

It can spread its wicked powers to surround its territory so that enemies won't be able to approach it and cause them to experience excruciating fatigue.

Habitat[]

Moltres is usually found near volcanoes or fiery highlands.

Appearances[]

Anime[]

Moltres first appears in the Anime series episode, Island of the Giant Pokémon, but this version is a giant robot.

Moltres and the two other legendary Flying Pokémon are the basis for the second movie. Moltres is one of the Legendary Pokémon that is being captured together with Articuno and Zapdos. When they are all brought together, an extremely dangerous fight breaks out among the three. However, during the duel the Lugia comes out and tries with Ash Ketchum to bring peace between the three.

Trivia[]

  • Moltres is one of the two legendary Pokémon that is found in the Victory Road of the generation it was introduced in, the other Pokémon being Terrakion.
  • Out of all legendary Pokémon found in the Pokémon games, Moltres's location has been moved the most.
  • Before Generation III, Moltres was shown to have wings fully engulfed in flames.
  • In Super Smash Bros., Moltres is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Poké Balls. During this time, it uses the move Fly.
  • Moltres (Alongside Articuno & Zapdos) is one of the collectable spirits in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
  • Like other Galarian Legendary Birds, Shiny Galarian Moltres has its Kantonian Form's color scheme.

Origin[]

Moltres may be based on legends of firebirds such as the phoenix, the Slavic firebird, or the Bennu. It may also be based on the Japanese mythical bird known as 朱雀 Suzaku, guardian of the South, which is not a true phoenix. But is usually ascribed an affinity with fire, which is represented by Moltres's magenta covered flames running from the head down through the tail and the flaming wings.

Galarian Moltres is based on darker legends surrounding the phoenix, the Slavic firebird, or the Bennu, in where destruction and chaos typically precedes its purification and rebirth. It may also be based on Badb, a Celtic goddess which used to frequent battlefields, filling soldiers with rage and fury, similar to Galarian Moltres' wrathful nature and ability to fill enemies with fatigue. It is depicted as a crow, and is often represented as being one of the three members of the Morrigan, which is comparable to the legendary birds' connection with Lugia.

Its dark magic-like powers appear to draw minor inspiration from the Eurasian species of birds known as wrynecks or jynxes, whom in British witchcraft were birds known by their unusual ability to twist their heads and elongate their necks while making disorenting high pitched screams in response to threats such as snakes, and in turn were believed to have and were widely sought for their powerful affinities for curses and black magic due to this, and are the originating namesake of the modern day word jinx.

Etymology[]

Moltres, its name in English, Spanish, Italian, Hindi, and Russian, is a portmanteau of molten, molt (the process of an animal intentionally casting off parts of its body for a beneficial purpose, such as a bird losing its feathers to grow new ones), and tres, Spanish for "three."

Faiyā, its Japanese name, is a transliteration of the English word "fire." Its Korean name, Faier, and its Thai name, Faiyoe, have the same etymology.

Its French name, Sulfura, is a portmanteau of sulfur (a yellow, flammable element commonly found in volcanoes), sulfureux (sulfurous or infernal), and Ra, the Egyptian god of the sun, who was often depicted as a falcon-headed humanoid. Its fellow legendary birds are also named after gods, though in their case they're named after Norse gods (Odin and Thor) rather than Egyptian gods.

Its German name, Lavados, is derived from the word lava, with the "dos" here not referring to the Spanish word for "two" but instead coming from the "-os" suffix all three legendary birds have in German.

Its name in Mandarin Chinese and former name in Cantonese Chinese, 火焰鳥 / 火焰鸟, pronounced Huǒyànniǎo in Mandarin and Fóyihmníuh in Cantonese, means "flame bird."

Its current name in Cantonese, 火鳥, pronounced Fóníuh, means "fire bird."
