Oranguru (Japanese: ヤレユータン, HepburnYareyuutan) (or-RANG-goo-roo[1]) is a normal/psychic-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VII. It is exclusive to Pokémon Moon.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Oranguru is an ape Pokémon. It has white fur, grey skin, a wide face with a 4-edged star on its forehead and a cloak resting in its back. It is always seen to be holding a fan made from leaves in its right hand.

Behavior[]

Oranguru are solitary Pokémon that dwell deep in the canopies of rainforests. These mysterious creatures spend much of their time meditating in silence. Oranguru are also kindhearted Pokémon that help other ill or wounded Pokémon.

Oranguru can be difficult to raise, as they look down on trainers less knowledgeable than themselves and tend to act on their own accords. They also don't get along well with others of their kind, engaging in intellectual battles of wits when encountering one another to prove superiority (and territorial claims). Shockingly, Oranguru have proven able to learn how to manipulate human inventions like Potions all on their own. Some have even reported seeing Oranguru use Poké Balls in the wild.

Pokédex entries[]

  • Sun

Known for its extreme intelligence, this Pokémon will look down on inexperienced Trainers, so it's best suited to veteran Trainers.

  • Moon

Deep in the jungle, high in the lofty canopy, this Pokémon abides. On rare occasions, it shows up at the beach to match wits with Slowking.

  • Ultra Sun

It normally spends its time meditating in the treetops. It throws Poké Balls and gives other Pokémon orders as it pleases.

  • Ultra Moon

Oranguru don't get along with each other, so they’re always engaging in battles of wits to decide which one is superior.

  • Sword

With waves of its fan made from leaves and its own fur. Oranguru skillfully gives instructions to other Pokémon.

  • Shield

It knows the forest inside and out. If it comes across a wounded Pokémon, Oranguru will gather medicinal herbs to treat it.

  • Scarlet

People used to mistake Oranguru for a human when they saw it issue command after command to the other Pokémon of the forest.

  • Violet

This Pokémon lives quietly in the depths of the forest. The purple, cape-like fur gets longer and longer as Oranguru ages.

    Trivia[]

    • While not an evolution of Passimian, it is considered a counterpart of it, as it is a version exclusive like Passimian as well as being of two types that one (Normal) weak to Passimian and the other (Psychic) strong against it.
    • Oranguru is one of four Pokémon that are Normal/Psychic type. The other three are Girafarig, Meloetta (in Aria Forme), and Indeedee.

    Origin[]

Oranguru is based on an orangutan and a teacher. It is also likely based on satori, a mind-reading monkey from Japanese mythology, possibly being the inspiration for its Psychic type.

    Etymology[]

Oranguru is a combination of the words orangutan (a genus of primates) and guru (a teacher that is wise and influential).

Its Japanese name, Yareyūtan, is a portmanteau of やれ (yare, "do it", referring to its signature move Instruct) and orangutan.

    Names in other languages[]

    • English, Italian and Spanish: Oranguru
    • French: Gouroutan
    • German: Kommandutan
    • Chinese: 智挥猩 (Mainland, simplified) / 智揮猩 (Mainland, traditional / Taiwan)
    • Korean: 하랑우탄
