Bellossom (Japanese: キレイハナ, HepburnKireihana) (bell-LAHS-um[1]) is a Grass-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Bellossom is a light green Pokémon that has green and yellow petals around its waist that resembles a skirt. Because the skirt goes down to the floor, it is unknown if Bellossom has feet or not. Upon its head, there are two bright red flowers. It has blue eyes that are circular.

Behavior[]

Bellossom is a graceful, mysterious, and adorable Pokémon. According to ancient myth, their swaying movements are part of a ritual to summon the sun at dawn. They are generally cheerful and enjoy dancing under a bright sun. However, it hates being told it is cute, as seen in Time After Time.

Evolution[]

Bellossom is the evolved form of Gloom by use of a Sun Stone.

Breeding[]

To see the Egg Moves that Bellossom can learn, refer to Oddish.

Sprites[]

    Appearances[]

    Anime[]

Bailey has two Bellossom named Belle and Bella who debuted in Flower Power.

    Trivia[]

    • Bellossom grows lighter when it evolves, being 12.8 pounds (5.8 kg) while Gloom is 19.0 pounds (8.6 kg). It is slightly heavier than Oddish, which is 11.9 pounds (5.4 kg).
    • Bellossom's Shiny sprites in Generation II had a blue face (resembling Oddish), but it was later changed to purple in Generation III onward.
    • Bellossom is the only mono-type Pokémon to have its pre-evolution be a dual-type Pokémon.
    • Despite being based on a hula dancer, supposedly being plentiful in the tropics, and having a connection to the sun, wild Bellossom can never be obtained in the Alola region in Generation VII; in fact, every member of its evolutionary line (including Oddish, which has a connection to the moon) is nowhere to be found. Despite this, NPC versions of them can be seen; first when an NPC shows up with one under her ownership, second when a Bellossom appears in an Aether Paradise cutscene, and third when cardboard cutouts depicting the Pokémon can be found.
      • Ironically, the Pokémon and its line can be found in the Galar region, a place that was described as "too cold" for many Pokémon to live in by Game Freak. One of its Pokédex entries in Generation VIII (a recycling of its older entries) even explicitly describes it as being plentiful in the tropics.

    Origin[]

Bellossom is based on different types of flowers and a hula dancer. It may also incorporate elements of belly dancing.

    Etymology[]

Bellossom comes from blossom, bell, and possibly belly (seeing how it may be based on belly dancers). It may also come from bella (Spanish for pretty) or awesome.

Its Japanese name, Kireihana, comes from kirei (pretty), rei (bell), and hana (flower). Its name also translates into beautiful.
