Nincada (Japanese: ツチニン, Hepburn: Tsuchinin) (nin-KAH-da) is a Bug/Ground-Type Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

Biology

Physiology

Nincada is a small, whitish, insectoid Pokémon. It has a pointed snout, a thin stripe that dips in a V-shaped pattern between its eyes, and two whisker-like antennae on its face. Its eyes are black with green iris-like rings inside. As it is virtually blind, it uses its antennae to sense its surroundings. On its back is a pair of small, green wings. Its hind legs are white, but the forelegs are brown and have sharp claws.

Behavior

The claws are used to carve the roots of tree and absorb moisture and nutrients. Nincada builds underground nests at the roots of trees. It does not like sunlight, so it avoids it.They can spend as long as 10 years underground, making their nests between the thick roots of large trees so they do not have to travel far to find food. Nincada will use their claws to dig out tunnels connecting their nests to other important areas: water sources, other trees, and exit tunnels to the surface should their nests flood from rain. Nincada need to molt their exoskeletons to continue growing. When molting, they will travel up their exit tunnels onto the trunks of the trees they are nesting in. They do this at night, after the sun has gone down. When they near evolution, they molt for a final time, but do not return to their nests afterwards.

Natural abilities

Its special ability is Compoundeyes. This Pokémon grows underground, sensing its surroundings using antennae instead of its virtually blind eyes.

Evolution

Nincada can evolve into Ninjask and Shedinja. Nincada evolves into Ninjask at level 20; if the player also possesses an extra Poké Ball and an empty slot in their party, Shedinja will also appear when it evolves.

• Nincada is the only Pokémon that evolves into two Pokémon at once.
• Nincada is one of the five Pokémon that cannot be transferred to other Generation VIII games besides their own game with the others being Spinda, Gigantamax Pikachu, Gigantamax Meowth, and Gigantamax Eevee.

Origin

Nincada is based on a burrowing cicada nymph. It might also be based on a trainee ninja as its name and species imply.

Nincada comes from the words ninja and cicada.
