Nidoking (Japanese: ニドキング, HepburnNidokingu) (NEE-doe-king[1]) is a Poison/Ground-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I that is the male counterpart to Nidoqueen.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Nidoking is a large purple Pokémon with a very large horn and large ears. He has a large bulky tail and he has one-toed feet and three-fingered hands.

Behavior[]

Nidoking attacks his foes by sweeping his large and bulky tail, his horn also contains venom. In Nidoran families, Nidoking assume the roles of protectors and hunters, patrolling in search of food to bring back to their burrows for their mates and offspring. An enraged Nidoking is particularly dangerous, as it will go on a rampage that can only be stopped either by defeating the Pokémon—a difficult task that only a few Pokémon can accomplish—or by being calmed down by its partner Nidoqueen. Threatening their families is one of the most common triggers for such attacks. Luckily, their rarity in the wild in combination with their tendency to stay away from human settlements makes berserk Nidoking a very rare, albeit still very dangerous, problem in most metropolitan areas.

Natural abilities[]

Nidothing has the Poison Point and Rivalry abilities. His horn is full of poison, capable of shattering diamonds and his tail can sweep telephone poles as if they were matchsticks.

Evolution[]

Nidoking is the evolved form of Nidorino by use of a Moon Stone. Nidoking is the final evolution of Nidoran♂.

Trivia[]

  • Nidoking is the first Pokémon to have "King" in its name.

Origin[]

Nidoking bears a close resemblance to Baragon, a kaiju from the Godzilla series. Despite this, its jaw bears a striking resemblance to Neronga, a similar-looking kaiju from the Ultraman series.

Etymology[]

Nidoking comes from the words needle and king. It could also come from cnidocyte, a cell that reacts to venom.
