Vaporeon concept artwork

Concept artwork of Vaporeon

Vaporeon shares physical traits with aquatic animals and feliforms in appearance. Its body is light-blue with a white, finned ruff around its neck. Vaporeon has a round head, a blunt, short, cat-like muzzle, and a small triangular nose. It has cream-yellowish ear-like fins on both sides of its head, along with a third fin-like appendage on the top of its forehead head. It has blue ridges that run down the length of its head, spine, and along its tail-fin. Its long tail resembles that of a dolphin, whale, or mermaid.

A Shiny Vaporeon is mostly light purple in color while its ridges turn dark purple. Its ear-like fins and ruff remain the same.

Vaporeon's molecular structure is close to water, and its body glitters when sunlight hits at certain angles because of this nature. It has a graceful, slender, feline body shape all around, further adapting it to aquatic regions so it could swim faster. Vaporeon is the result of an Eevee's exposure to the radiation of a Water Stone.

Behavior[]

Vaporeon prefer clean freshwater lakes. They have developed gills to become better suited to an aquatic lifestyle, and their cell composition's similarity to water allows them to melt into the water. They themselves also love to swim.

Natural abilities[]

Vaporeon are highly adapted to aquatic life. Unlike their pre-evolution (or its counterparts), they have the ability to breathe underwater. Vaporeon have the power to melt into water and disappear, and are shown to be able to manipulate water molecules. They can detect moisture and water with their light-blue fins. If their fins jitter around, this indicates rain is coming.

Evolution[]

Vaporeon is one of Eevee's eight possible evolutions that is caused by being exposed to a Water Stone.

Trivia[]

  • Vaporeon, alongside Flareon and Jolteon, are one of Eevee's original evolutions.
  • Vaporeon has the highest HP of all the Eeveelutions.
  • Due to its bulk, Vaporeon is the largest and slowest of all the Eeveelutions.
  • Vaporeon is the only Eeveelution that has four syllables in its name.
  • Vaporeon's original sprite in Pocket Monsters Red and Pocket Monsters Green is strangely different from its normal design. It is shown with bigger frills at the sides of its head, skinnier tail fins, a tooth hanging from its mouth, black ears, a tiny fin-crest on its back and smaller fins at the back of its legs.
  • In Pokémon Yellow Special Pikachu Edition, as Blue, the player's rival, uses Eevee as his first partner Pokémon, it is possible for him to evolve it into any of the three available evolutions at the time. In the case of Vaporeon, if the player loses the initial battle in Prof. Oak's laboratory, Eevee will immediately become this Eeveelution, therefore giving the player a type advantage based on their Pikachu.
  • In Pokémon GO, Vaporeon is one of the few Pokémon that can have a CP of 3000 or more that is not a Mythical or Legendary.
  • The head of Vaporeon has a slight resemblance to the enemy Zoras from The Legend of Zelda series.

Origin[]

According to Motofumi Fujiwara, a key person at Game Freak, Eevee was based on a vague childhood experience he had. He described seeing an "indefinable creature" and that Eevee was based on a drawing of all that he could remember of it. Though it wasn't based on any distinct animal, Fujiwara mentioned that Eevee reminded him of a fluffy cat or dog-like creature. Each one of Eevee's evolutions are based on the same design but are made to resemble their type.[2]

In addition to being catlike and generally feliform in general morphology, Vaporeon also has traits of aquatic mammals. As it resembles and has been referred to as a mermaid, it is possible that Vaporeon is also based on the Merlion, a mythological creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish.

It may also be based on a visual pun on "catfish".

Etymology[]

Vaporeon's name comes from the words vapor and eon. Also, its Japanese name, "Shawaazu", literally means "shower".

Names in other languages[]

  • English, Italian and Spanish: Vaporeon
  • French: Aquali
  • German: Aquana
  • Chinese: 水伊布 / 水伊貝 (HK) / 水精靈 (Taiwan)
  • Korean: 샤미드
