Sunkern (Japanese: ヒマナッツ, Hepburn: Himanattsu) (SUN-kern) is a Grass-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

Biology

Physiology

Sunkern are small, seed-like Pokémon that resembles a sunflower seed. They have black, oval shaped eyes with a sprout coming out the of their yellow/black bodies.

Behavior

Sunkern's entire life is centered around its evolution into a Sunflora. It moves as little as possible, trying to preserve the energy and nutrients it requires for the evolution process. If attacked, they likely will only attempt to shake their leaves weakly at their opponents. They often will seek shelter and protection within treetops, nestling themselves in the nooks and crannies of branches and leaves. In the morning, Sunkern can commonly be seen dropping ​down onto the ground out of the blue, blown off by strong breezes. They rely almost entirely on the sun, its light, and its warmth to supply the primary factors in their growths. During cooler, cloudier summers, Sunkern will go into hibernation and seem to disappear entirely. Then, the following year, if the summer weather improves, Sunkern populations will appear to explode as masses of hibernating Sunkern reawaken to bask in the warm sunlight.

Diet

According to the Pokédex, Sunkern's diet is said only to be morning dew, which collects under the leaves of plants beneath it.

Evolution

Sunkern evolves into Sunflora with the use of a Sun Stone.

Trivia

• Before Generation VII, Sunkern had the worst base stat total of any Pokémon. With all of its stats being 30 points each, Sunkern's complete total is 180, which is less than the so-called weakest Pokémon. While this title was later taken by Wishiwashi (which has a base stat total of 175), the latter's stats gain a temporary, yet massive increase upon assuming its School Form.

Origin

Sunkern is primarily based on a sunflower seed that has grown a shoot, though it shares elements with popcorn kernels. When combined with its tendency to suddenly fall out of the sky, it's also a pun on shooting stars, hence 'shooting sunflower.' All of this is backed up by how the species can learn Seed Bomb and has population explosions after cold summers.

Etymology

Sunkern is a combination of the words sunflower and kernel.
