Bibarel (Japanese: ビーダル, HepburnBiidaru) (bee-BER-rel[1]) is a Normal/Water-type Pokémon Introduced in Generation IV.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Bibarel is a fat, brown, quadrupedal, mammalian Beaver Pokémon. It has a cream colored patch on its chest and face stamps around its eyes. Its tail is dark brown with cream markings. It's paws are dark brown with cream pads. Its snout is short and dark brown with teeth and a red, triangular nose.

Gender differences[]

Male Bibarel have bigger face stamps than the females.

Behavior[]

Bibarel builds its nest around water. These dams are made of roots and branches, and prevent water banks from overflowing. Bibarel are sensitive to small changes in water currents, allowing them to sense flash floods before they occur. When they feel deluges approaching, they will quickly reinforce their dams.

They spend their days cutting down new trees to patch up holes in their dams while making sure that they will not overflow. This rigorous inspection process is highly effective; within the last decade, there have been fewer overflows in Bibarel dams than there have in human ones. Because of this, communities who live near or in former riverbeds greatly appreciate Bibarel populations, holding festivals in honor of these diligent Pokémon.

Evolution[]

Bibarel is the evolved form of Bidoof.

    Trivia[]

    • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Bibarel.
    • Bibarel is one of the few Pokémon whose official artwork depicts a female.
    • Despite its large, plump build and aquatic nature, Bibarel can't legitimately have Thick Fat.

    Origin[]

Bibarel is based on a beaver.

    Etymology[]

    • Bibarel is a portmanteau of beaver and barrel (the latter referring to its fat, cylindrical body shape, its Water-typing, and its brown, wood-like body color). It may also incorporate bib (due to the light patch on its chest), blubber (thick fat often found in marine mammals and some marine birds, due to its obesity and aquatic nature), and possibly barrier or barricade, as it constructs dams.
    • Bīdaru is a portmanteau of beaver and 樽 (taru, Japanese for "barrel," likely for the same reasons as its English name). It may also incorporate dull, either due to its dull colors, the lack of intelligence Bidoof (and perhaps Bibarel) has, or possibly referring to its normal type, だるま (daruma, a type of round Japanese doll, in reference to its rotund figure), 怠い (darui, Japanese for "sluggish" or "heavy"), たるみ (tarumi, Japanese for "flabbiness," due to its fatness), ビール腹 (bīrubara, Japanese for "potbelly"), and/or builder, as it constructs dams.
