Gastly (Japanese: ゴース, HepburnGhos) (GAST-lee[1]) is a Ghost/Poison-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It is Machop's counterpart.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Gastly's appearance consists of a dark sphere (its "head") surrounded by light purple gas. Gastly has large, white eyes and a large mouth with a small pair of fangs.

Behavior[]

They capture prey by enveloping them in their poisonous gas, which can seep through skin and cause fainting. They may also immobilize prey with the paralyzing move Lick. Despite their poor reputation, though, Gastly are not blatantly malicious and do not “haunt” beings with the intent of harming them. Instead, they are mischievous pranksters who enjoy startling others. They rarely utilize their poisonous gases unless threatened, but are known to put victims to sleep with Hypnosis. Their pranks can be annoying at times, so it should be noted that oscillating fans are very effective at warding Gastly away because the Pokémon steer clear of strong winds. When Gastly are near, it is said the air will smell faintly sweet.

Characteristics[]

Due to having a body made of gas, Gastly can slip into any place it wants. However, Gastly's body will dwindle away when exposed to a strong wind. It can also render itself nearly invisible and approach enemies undetected, and can envelop said enemies, regardless of their size.

Habitat[]

Due to the fact that Gastly's body can be blown away by strong wind, they gather under the eaves of houses in order to escape it.

Evolution[]

Gastly evolves into Haunter starting at level 25, which evolves into Gengar when traded.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS[]

    Gastly SSB4 3DS

A Gastly in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS

Gastly appears as an enemy in the Smash Run mode of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. Because Gastlys are covered in poisonous gas, they can only take damage from projectiles. A Gastly can damage players on contact, and will sometimes follow them.

Like every other enemy in Smash Run mode, Gastly is also featured in the form of a trophy.

    Trivia[]

    • In one of its Pokédex entries, an Indian elephant is mentioned which contradicts knowledge of the Pokémon World as such animals don't exist. An Indian elephant is also mentioned in one of the Pokédex entries for Raichu in the original series episode "Electric Shock Showdown!"
      • In Generation VIII, a Pokémon based on an Indian Elephant (Copperajah) may possibly be this elephant. However, it is Steel-type, therefore would be immune to Gastly's poison gas.
    • In The Ghost of Maiden's Peak, Gastly happens to hate sunlight.
    • In The Ghost of Maiden's Peak, Gastly can speak without the use of Telekinesis, or an outside interpreter.
    • Gastly's prototype name was "Spirit".
    • Gastly gains the least weight of any Pokémon upon evolving, gaining no weight upon evolving into Haunter.
    • In Pokémon Moon the entry for Gastly reads “Although Gastly is barely visible, when it's near, a faint sweet smell lingers.” It’s unknown exactly what Gastly smells like though.

    Origin[]

Gastly appears to be based on ghosts, specifically those often depicted as decapitated heads, which are often seen in Japanese mythology. It may also be based on a will-o-wisp, seeing how its gas resembles fire and its Shiny coloration has its gas turn blue, which are a common color given to will-o-wisps in media. Its poison gas may be based on bad omens and how they can bring sickness.

    Etymology[]

Gastly is based on the words ghastly and gas.
