Ferroseed (Japanese: テッシード, HepburnTesshiido) (fer-AH-seed[1]) is a Grass/Steel-type Pokémon introduced in Generation V. Its first appearance was in Pokémon Black and White.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Ferroseed is a small oval-shaped metallic Pokémon that resembles a spiked acorn. Ferroseed have three horizontal black lines encircling it, and many sharp green thorns covering its body. Its eyes are yellow and have green rims around them.

Behavior[]

Ferroseed are one of the main hazards that spelunkers face when exploring mineral-rich caverns. These heavy Pokémon can be found stuck to the walls and ceilings of caves, absorbing minerals through their spikes. When they have finished draining one location of nutrients, they will roll (on walls) or drop down (from ceilings) to new locations—hikers must constantly be aware of what is above them, since Ferroseed can and will drop without any notice; in Chargestone Cave of the Unova region, injuries from falling Ferroseed actually are the most common cause of harm.

Though unintentionally dangerous, Ferroseed are actually rather docile Pokémon. They won't attack unless attacked first, and even when faced an aggressor, the most a Ferroseed will do is release a burst of spikes being rolling away to safety. Their aim is quite poor without practice, however. Though their spikes make them very poor movers, Ferroseed can actually spin in place quickly by balancing themselves on the point of a single spike like a top. They have been known to lodge themselves into rocks in this manner. Recently, scientists have discovered that Ferrossed not only absorb minerals from stone through their spikes, but also vital nutrients from the moss that covers cave walls and ceilings.

Natural abilities[]

Ferroseed can shoot a barrage of spikes from its body when attacked, allowing it to flee by rapidly rolling away.

Evolution[]

Ferroseed evolves into Ferrothorn at level 40.

Trivia[]

  • Due to the abundance of spiked thorns on Ferroseed's body, it can be difficult to pet it in the Pokémon-Amie. Touching these thorns will hurt the player character's hand.
  • Starting in Generation VI, Ferroseed's model is completely still in battle unless attacking. This is similar to Sudowoodo.
  • Although it attacks enemies by launching sharp spikes and can be seen firing off the spines on its body as part of its attack animation, Ferroseed is unable to learn the move Spike Cannon.

Origin[]

Ferroseed appears to be based on cockleburs, durians, or seeds from horse-chestnut trees or datura, all of which are known for their rough, durable skin and sharp thorns. Given its Steel typing, it may also be based on a mace.

Etymology[]

Ferroseed comes from ferrum (Latin for "iron") and seed.

Its Japanese name, Tesseed, may be a combination of 鉄 (tetsu, iron) and seed.
