Grimer (Japanese: ベトベター, HepburnBetobetaa) (GRIME-er[1]) is a Poison-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It has a Poison/Dark-type Alolan Form in Generation VII.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Grimer was created when sludge in a dirty stream was exposed to the moon's X-rays. It is composed primarily of putrid, hardened sludge and grime. It smells incredibly foul, and can influence the abandonment of entire cities due to its polluting nature-even weeds don't grow where a Grimer has appeared. Grimer thrives in filthy areas, such as factories, garbage dumps, sewers and polluted water systems. It survives and matures by sucking up polluted sludge that is pumped out of factories, adding toxic waste to its already toxic girth.

Alolan Grimer concept art

Concept artwork of Alolan Grimer.

Alolan Grimer's body structure is largely the same as Kantonian Grimer, though its appearance is different. It has a dark green body with a yellow streak across its lower lip that extends all around its head. It also has black space around its eyes. Inside its mouth is a blue tongue with two "teeth", which are actually crystallized toxins that are highly dangerous to touch.

Behavior[]

It enters sewers and other areas with great ease due to its rubbery, semi-viscous body; for example, it can enter barred-off areas by slipping between the narrow bars. If one stick his/her hand in a Grimer, it will be very hard to get it out.

An Alolan Grimer is brought to the Alolan region to deal with the increase of garbage, as well as keeping the Trubbish and Garbodor populations in check. It has adapted into eating solid waste instead of liquid waste. Grimer has a huge obsession of garbage, eating huge amounts at a fast pace; eating garbage constantly has caused Grimer to form crystallized toxins in its mouth.

Natural abilities[]

Grimer can have the ability Stench or the ability Sticky Hold. Stench decreases the chances of encountering a wild Pokémon when Grimer is the first party Pokémon. Sticky Hold prevents the theft of Grimer's held item.

Evolution[]

Grimer evolves into Muk at level 38.

Goh Grimer

Goh's Grimer.

Grimer made their debut in TB030: Sparks Fly for Magnemite alongside their evolved form Muk Goh owns a Grimer that he caught in Dreams Are Made of These!.

Trivia[]

  • In the Fleetway Comics Sonic the Hedgehog continuity, Dr. Robotnik has an assistant called Grimer.
  • Grimer and Alolan Grimer's colorings and shiny colorings are reversed. Normal Grimer's color is purple while its shiny is green and vice-versa for Alolan Grimer.
  • Grimer is said to have been created by X-rays from the moon. This would be impossible, as the moon doesn't produce any light of its own, instead reflecting light from the sun. Even still, most of the X-rays would either reflect off back into space or be blocked by Earth's atmosphere.
  • Grimer is one of the two Pokémon that doesn't change its weight during evolution. The other is Gastly.

Origin[]

Grimer is based on a pool of sewage, liquid toxic waste, or acid. It may also be based on mutated monsters which are often speculated to be created from pollution, especially of toxic waste. It also appears similar to the monster Hedorah of the Japanese Godzilla Series.

Alolan Grimer is likely based on an oil slick due to its rainbow colors. Oil slicks are also a threat to Hawaii (the region Alola is based on), especially in its oceans.

Etymology[]

Grimer comes from grime.

Betobetā comes from ベトベト and ベタベタ (betobeto and betabeta, both meaning sticky).
