Carracosta (Japanese: アバゴーラ, HepburnAbagoora) (kar-ruh-KOSS-tuh[1]) is a Water/Rock-type Fossil Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Carracosta is an ancient-looking reptilian Pokémon that resembles a large, bipedal sea turtle. Its body is dark blue and light blue, and it has a giant black rocky shell on its back. It also has a scaly black covering over its face and a very small tail. It has three oval-shaped, claw shaped markings on each of its front flippers and it has two toed feet bearing nails colored the same as its front appendages.

Behavior[]

Carracosta is an amphibious Pokémon, spending most of its time underwater and on land. Its front appendages are strongly developed and can knock out opponents in just a single slap as well as ripping a hole underneath a tanker. Carracosta consumes the shell and bones of its prey to fortify its sturdy shell. It hunts prey on dry land despite having slow land mobility.

Evolution[]

Carracosta is the evolved form of Tirtouga at level 37.

  • Moon

Active both on land and in the sea, this Pokémon drags its land-based prey into the water to finish it off.

  • Ultra Sun

  • Ultra Moon

Carracosta eats every last bit of the prey it catches, even the shells and bones, to further strengthen its sturdy shell.

  • Sword

Mystery Dungeon[]

In Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, Carracosta is the adoptive father of the partner Pokémon.

Trivia[]

  • Carracosta's types, Water and Rock, share the same type with the Kanto Fossils: Omanyte and Kabuto, while Archeops' types, Rock and Flying, share the same type with the third Kanto Fossil: Aerodactyl.
  • Tirtouga and its evolution Carracosta are the only Fossil Pokémon to have the Rock type as a secondary type instead of a primary one.
  • Similar to Carracosta, Drednaw is also a Water/Rock type turtle Pokémon.

Origin[]

Carracosta is based on the Archelon, an extinct group of giant sea turtles. Its shell also resembles a bulletproof vest.

It may also be based on Gamera, a large turtle kaiju especially the pair of elongated tusks at the corners of mouth.

Etymology[]

Carracosta comes from carapace (a protective shell of an animal) and costa (Latin, Spanish, and Portuguese for "coast").
