Wooper (Japanese: ウパー, HepburnUpaa) (WOOP-pur[1]) is a Water/Ground-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II, and a Poison/Ground-type introduced in Generation IX.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Wooper is a small Pokémon with a large head and beady black eyes with white pupils. It has no arms, stubby feet with no legs, a comparatively long tail, and spiky antennae jutting out from its head, on which are four branches that function as gills. Most of its body is a pale blue, including its tail, feet, and head - its eyes, gills, the patterns on its stomach, and the inside of its mouth are the sole exceptions.

Wooper in the Paldea region has a brown coloration, with two pairs of bone-shaped gills branching from its head, as well as an eight-pronged pattern on its stomach.

Gender differences[]

Male Wooper have four branches on each antenna, while females have only two.

Behavior[]

Similarly to Poliwhirl and Clobbopus, Wooper normally live in the water, though they come out of the water to search for food when evening arrives and the temperature drops. When they come up and walk around on land, they coat their bodies with a slimy, gooey film to keep themselves from drying out- however, the film is also toxic and poisonous, so touching them causes a stinging pain. When they go to sleep, they half-bury themselves in mud at the bottom.

Paldean Wooper once lived in the water during ancient times until they were forced out of their territory. As a result, they gradually adapted to living on land, namely in marshes. Paldean Wooper employs two adaptations to allow it to survive on land: its gills have hardened, and it coats its body with a poisonous film that keeps it from drying out. However, these adaptations resulted in Paldean Wooper having heavy bodies and being only able to move really slowly. To defend itself, Paldean Wooper can use its gills to unleash a powerful poisonous liquid.

Natural abilities[]

Wooper have the ability to make a dangerous toxic film to deter predators and keep themselves hydrated. They also have a natural talent with Ground-type moves - despite their small size, they can learn the move Earthquake by leveling up.

Habitat[]

Wooper usually live in the water, though the Pokédex in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen says they live at the water's edge. Judging by its Friend Area preference in the first few Mystery Dungeon games, it also lives in swamps and marshes.

Evolution[]

Wooper evolves upon reaching level 20; Johtonian Wooper evolve into Quagsire, while Paldean Wooper evolve into Clodsire.

Trivia[]

  • Wooper & Gastly could learn Ice Punch in Generation II, despite not having arms.
  • In the anime, a Wooper had a heart on its chest.
  • Wooper's cry in the anime sounds like Upah! much like its Japanese name, ウパー (Upah).
  • Despite Wooper and Quagsire being called the Water Fish Pokémon, they are not fish Pokémon, and are more amphibian-like.
  • Prior to Generation IX, Wooper was only listed in the even number generation Pokédex listings.

Origin[]

Wooper and its evolution are based on the axolotl, a kind of Mexican salamander, (which is further seen in its Shiny coloration, where it turns pink, like most axolotls colored in artworks), other kinds of salamander, and possibly a mud-fish.

In its Paldean form the Wooper in question does resemble a mud-fish.

Etymology[]

Wooper and Upah come from ウパー (Upah), Japanese for axolotl.
