Kakuna (Japanese: コクーン, HepburnKokuun) (kah-KOO-na[1]) is a Bug/Poison-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Kakuna is an insect-like Pokémon with an appearance similar to that of a yellow chrysalis. As a chrysalis, the interior of Kakuna's very hard shell is unseen, with no limbs or other features being shown. Only Kakuna's eyes, jet black in color, are visible on the shell, which are somewhat large in proportion to its body. In Pokémon Red and Blue Versions, Kakuna had arm-like limbs, which were never seen afterwards.

Behavior[]

Weedle seek out trees, branches or piles of leaves to hide in; when they evolve into Kakuna, their ability to move becomes severely restricted, and they can only inch about very slowly. They can sometimes be seen hanging from tree branches on strands of silk in large numbers. Kakuna can only learn Harden naturally. When provoked, though, they can also extend poison barbs from their tips slightly to defend themselves. These Pokémon try to conserve as much energy as possible for evolution, however, so they will only exert energy to unsheathe their barbs when absolutely necessary.

Their hard cocoons protect the soft bodies within, which essentially liquify as they reconfigure themselves for evolution. This process, a fervor of activity that contrasts their immobility, causes their internal body temperatures to rise drastically, so much so that the shells of Kakuna nearing evolution feel uncomfortably hot to the touch. Their bodies only continue to heat up as they draw closer to their final transformations.

Natural abilities[]

As Kakuna are inside of a shell, they have little or no movement and almost no offensive capabilities. As a defensive measure, they can harden their shells against an attacker and may even be able to use Poison Sting.

Evolution[]

Kakuna evolves from Weedle as of level 7 and evolves into Beedrill at level 10.

Appearances[]

Anime[]

Goh Kakuna

Goh's Kakuna.

Kakuna first appeared in the anime series in the episode Challenge of the Samurai, where they were being protected by their evolved form, Beedrill.

Kakuna have made various minor appearances throughout the series in a similar fashion to that of their debut appearance. Though many of them seen evolving into Beedrill.

Trivia[]

  • Kakuna, along with Metapod, Silcoon, and Cascoon are all known as the Cocoon Pokémon.
    • Consistently all of them can only use Harden when caught in wild.
  • Despite its mouth not being outside, it can still learn Bug Bite via the Move Tutor in Pokémon Platinum.
  • Kokoon was the original prototype name for Kakuna.
  • Kakuna seems to have a shape that resembles a necktie under its head.
  • Kakuna is shown evolving more than any other Pokémon in the anime, as several groups of Kakuna evolved in several episodes.
  • As seen in its Pokémon Red & Blue sprite and previous artwork, it is shown that Kakuna is able to extend its arms forward. This could possibly be its "stinger" or "barb" that is sometimes referred to in its Pokédex entries.
  • Kakuna, along with Silcoon and Cascoon, will stay in one place in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Explorers of Darkness, and will not follow the player's team, even as team members. Oddly enough, this does not apply to Metapod, which will follow the player's team.

Origin[]

Kakuna is based on a cocoon, a casing for the pupa of bees or wasps in which they begin to metamorphose into their adult stages. Some of its Pokédex entries state that it can heat up during evolution, possibly referencing how Japanese honey bees can create heat when bundling together, usually used as a defense mechanism or to heat the hive during wintertime.

Etymology[]

Kakuna's English and Japanese names are based on the word "cocoon", though the English name is more of a distorted version of the word. This applies for the species of Kakuna being a cocoon.
