Doublade (Japanese: ニダンギル, HepburnNidangiru) (DUH-blade[1]) is a Steel/Ghost-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VI.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Doublade is a ghostly Pokémon that appears to be based on a haunted pair of swords. Each sword has a pink eye on each brown hilt. On the bottom of each hilt is a strip of pink cloth. When in battle, Doublade unsheathes its razor-sharp blades, which are silver, and holds its double sheaths behind it.

Behavior[]

When Honedge evolves, it splits into the two swords that form Doublade. It is able to rub its dual blades together to create a high pitched sound that can disorient foes. The two swords converse telepathically and can carry out complicated attacks together. These attacks are very difficult for an experienced swordsman to block and can quickly rend an opponent to shreds.

Abilities[]

During the battle, it may be unsheathed from its scabbards.

Evolution[]

Doublade can be evolved from Honedge at level 35 and with a Dusk Stone it can evolve into Aegislash.

Trivia[]

Origin[]

Doublade is based on two crossed swords, possibly jian swords, specifically. With its Ghost type, it may be based on Japanese myths of how katanas are said to act on free will while possessing the soul of their user. It could also be based on tsukumogami, objects that were abandoned and forgotten and gain sentience, with sword tsukumogami being said to attack people. It could also be based on of the Tyrfind of Norse Mythology, a sword that was cursed to drain the life of its wielder whenever it was drawn. With its crossed swords and shield, it may also be based on a coat of arms.

Etymology[]

Doublade is a combination of double and blade.
