Remoraid (Japanese: テッポウオ, HepburnTeppouo) (REM-oh-raid[1]) is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Remoraid is a small, light blue fish-like Pokémon. It has a dorsal fin protruding from its head, saucer-like eyes and two dark blue stripes on its body. It has four pointed teeth, and two pectoral and caudal fins.

Behavior[]

Remoraid begin their lives in the sea. Upon hatching, they are largely unable to find hunt on their own. Instead, they use the suction pad-like fins on their heads to attach to the undersides of Mantine. There, they can consume scraps that drift past them while the Mantine are feeding. They will also defend the Mantine when they are endangered in order to keep their hosts safe.

Once they are old enough to find food for themselves, they travel into freshwater rivers. Remoraid hunt by hiding just beneath the river's surface and shooting out bullets of water at unsuspecting insects above. They can shoot up to 300 feet (91 m) away with amazing accuracy, even at moving targets. To do this, Remoraid squeeze their abdominal muscles to expel small pellets of water from their mouth. They also use this trick to escape from foes, propelling themselves backwards with the recoil. These “shots” even work underwater, striking foes from crevices on the riverbed or sea floor.

As evolution approaches, Remoraid will swim downstream in large numbers back into the ocean, where they will stay for the rest of their lives. In Alola, the Remoraid population is fact entirely maritime, breeding and developing solely in the ocean; there, they are known as the "snipers of the sea".

Part of their diet, as seen in variants from Hisui, are Burmy, which they shoot down from dangling branches.

Natural abilities[]

Remoraid can shoot with incredible accuracy to snipe their prey, shooting towards land and sea creatures alike.

Evolution[]

Remoraid evolves into Octillery when it reaches level 25. Remoraid also allows Mantyke to evolve into Mantine if one is present in a player's party when leveling up Mantyke. This evolution, however, does not get rid of Remoraid.

    Trivia[]

    • Remoraid has a similar cry to that of Sunflora and Natu.
    • The Gunfish enemy in the Pulseman games is similar to Remoraid. This might be done intentionally due to Ken Sugimori made and designed art for both games.
    • If the Generation II Pokérap is put into Pokédex order, Remoraids spot would not change.

    Origin[]

Due to its ability to latch onto Mantine, it is highly based on the remora. Its ability to shoot water from its mouth makes it similar to an archer fish. Its shape somewhat resembles that of a revolver (the dorsal fin being the iron sights, the front of its body being the barrel, the back of its body being the cylinder with the darker marks being the grooves between the cylinder's chambers, the pelvic fin being the trigger, the upper caudal fin being the hammer, and the lower caudal fin being the pistol grip) with its abilities possibly deriving from squirt guns.

    Etymology[]

Remoraid may come from remora and raid.

Its Japanese name, Teppouo, comes from teppō (gun) and uo (fish). It might also comes from teppōuo (archer fish).
