Glaceon (Japanese: グレイシア, Hepburn: Gureishia) (GLACE-ee-on[1]) is an Ice-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IV and is one of the eight evolutions forms of Eevee.
Biology[]
Physiology[]
Glaceon is a quadruped mammalian Pokémon that bears a resemblance to an Arctic animal. Its fur is a light-blue color, with diamond-shaped patterns on its back, tail, and ears in a darker shade of blue. Glaceon has a cerulean blue cap-like feature on its forehead with two long blue strips dangling from either side. It has a short feline muzzle with a small triangular nose along with long pointed ears. Glaceon's tail is long with a pointed dark blue diamond-shaped tip. It has small dainty paws and feet that are dark blue in color.
Glaceon's Shiny variation appears to have lighter fur, its diamond patterns being a slightly darker blue. Its cap-like feature is sky blue.
Special abilities[]
According to the Pokédex, Glaceon can control their body heat and freeze the air around them to create a diamond-dust flurry, and their emanating coldness can cause powdery snow to appear. In addition, they can form small ice crystal by lowering their surrounding temperature, and the lowest temperature their body can drop to is -60 degree Celsius (-75 degree Fahrenheit). By decreasing its body heat, they can also freeze their fur into sharp needles and nearby moisture into ice pellets to shoot at their prey.
Thanks to their ability of creating snow at will, skiing resorts are places where they are extremely welcomed.
Despite their proficiency over the cold, if Glaceon overexerts its powers, their body temperature will drop too low to the point that they would be unable to control it, resulting in hypothermia.[2]
Behavior[]
Most Glaceon are docile, powerful, cool and collected, making them a top choice for trainers.
However, wild Glaceon are skillful hunters. They either actively tackle their prey by shooting their spiky icicle fur, or enamor the victims through their captivating beauty to prevent them from being aware of eventually being frozen by their icy breath.
Evolution[]
In the core series, the method for evolving Eevee into Glaceon differs between games, but involve leveling up Eevee near an Ice Rock in a specific location. In Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version and Pokémon Platinum Version, Eevee can evolve into Glaceon by leveling up on Route 217 near the Ice Rock. In Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version, this evolution happens when Eevee levels up near the Ice Rock in Twist Mountain. In Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, this happens in Frost Cavern near the Ice Rock. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, Eevee evolves into Glaceon when leveled up in Shoal Cave during the low tide, inside the ice chamber. In Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, Eevee can evolve into Glaceon near the exit to the cavern near the Ice Rock on Mount Lanakila. In Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, Eevee evolves into Glaceon when using an Ice Stone, more consistent to how other Eevee evolves into one of the other Eeveelutions.
In the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, Eevee evolves into Glaceon from the player using the Frozen Rock instead.

Trivia[]
- Glaceon's Japanese name, Glacia, has the same name of one of the Hoenn Elite Four, Glacia.
- According to the Diamond and Pearl Pokédex, Glaceon and Leafeon's footprints are the same (it may also be related to the fact they both evolve under similar conditions, leveling up near a special rocks).
- Glaceon has the highest Special attack of non-legendary Ice-type Pokémon.
- Glaceon is tied with Espeon for the highest Special Attack of the Eeveelutions, although Espeon has a higher Speed and Glaceon has a higher Defense.
- Glaceon's highest stat (like Jolteon has Speed, Flareon has Attack, etc.) can be evasiveness, due to its ability, Snow Cloak.
- Despite Aurora Beam being an ice-type move, Glaceon cannot learn it via leveling up, yet another evolution of Eevee's the water-type Vaporeon can. This could be due to the move's association with other pure water-type like the legendary Suicune.
- Like Umbreon, Glaceon has a type-advantage against its evolutionary counterpart (Espeon and Leafeon respectively). The Dark-type Umbreon is strong against the Psychic-type Espeon and the Ice-type Glaceon is strong against the Grass-type Leafeon.
- Both Glaceon and Leafeon are weak against Flareon's Fire-type moves.
- However, unlike its counterpart Leafeon, Glaceon is weak against only a single evolution of Eevee, while Leafeon (and Vaporeon which is weak against Leafeon and Jolteon) is weak against 2 (the Fire-type Flareon and the Ice-type Glaceon). It shares this trait with Flareon and Espeon (as Jolteon, Umbreon, and Eevee itself posses no weakness against the other Eeveelutions) both of which are weak to only one evolution of Eevee.
- Like Flareon, Jolteon, Vaporeon, Umbreon, and Leafeon, Glaceon have a type-advantage against at least one of the Evolutions of Eevee types (Eevee and Espeon being the only ones not to possess a type advantage against any of the Eeveelutions).
- It shares the same species name with Vanillite as the both of them are the Fresh Snow Pokémon.
- In Generation VIII, both Leafeon and Glaceon gets a new way of evolving, they do not evolve in a certain place anymore, instead they evolve with Evolution Stones and that is by a Leaf Stone for Leafeon, and an Ice Stone for Glaceon.
- Prior to the changes in evolutionary methods, for 13 years, it was impossible to obtain Leafeon or Glaceon below Level 2, as the old method of leveling up near a rock obviously required leveling up at least once. However, as of Generation VIII, these Pokémon can now be obtained at Level 1, as no Experience Points are required for stone evolutions.
Origin[]
According to Motofumi Fujiwara, a key person at Game Freak, Eevee was based on a vague childhood experience he had. He described seeing an "indefinable creature" and that Eevee was based on a drawing of all that he could remember of it. Though it wasn't based on any distinct animal, Fujiwara mentioned that Eevee reminded him of a fluffy cat or dog-like creature. Each one of Eevee's evolutions are based on the same design but are made to resemble their type.[3]
It is likely based on the Arctic fox, due to its location and type, but also shares markings and the appearance of blue-point cats, mirroring Leafeon's inspiration of brown-point cats (such as the Siamese). The darker blue marks on its head that resemble hair or drooping ears could possibly be based on an ushanka, a Russian cap with ear flaps used to protect from the cold.
Considering the Nintendo references throughout the Pokémon franchise, Glaceon's typing, coloration and hair are evocative of Samus Aran from Metroid, specifically as a zoomorphism of her in her Zero Suit and wielding the Ice Beam, one of her signature attacks.
Etymology[]
The name Glaceon comes from the Latin word glacies, meaning ice, from which we also get the term glacier, a large, slow-moving mass of ice and snow accumulated over the course of centuries, capable of destroying mountains and reshaping whole continents in its wake, and "eon". Glaceon's name is also an anagram of "congreal", which means "to freeze".
