Magnemite (Japanese: コイル, Hepburn: Koiru) (MAG-nuh-mite[1]) is an Electric/Steel-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. Prior to Generation II, Magnemite was a pure Electric type.
Biology[]
Physiology[]
Magnemite has light bluish-gray steel body in the shape of a sphere which is kept bound together with the two screws and one large screw at the top of its head. It has one big eye that is as big as the magnets it uses; which can launch electric attacks. On the side of its body are two horseshoe magnets which expel antigravity, allowing it to float in mid-air.
Behavior[]
Magnemite emit electromagnetic energy from its horseshoe magnets in order to keep afloat. It consumes electricity by attaching itself to power lines. During power outages, people would often find large groups of Magnemites congregating inside of circuit breakers. If a Magnemite runs low on its electrical energy supply, it would be rendered incapable of flight (but can be recharged by batteries). It is normally pacifistic and would mostly only retaliate with non-damaging moves. Under the guidance of a Pokémon Trainer, they can become devoted fighters (though the bond needs to be strong enough first). Magnemite dislikes some sort of signal that Power Stations use to repel them, and are sensitive to geomagnetic storms accodring to PJ093 that can induce them to gather together akin to Wishiwashi's Schooling ability.
Natural abilities[]
The units at its sides generate electromagnetic waves that keep it airborne. It also feeds on electricity.
Evolution[]
Magnemite evolves into Magneton at level 30.

Pokédex entries[]
- Red and Blue
Uses antigravity to stay suspended. Appears without warning and uses Thunder Wave and similar moves.
- Yellow
It is born with the ability to defy gravity. It floats in air on powerful electromagnetic waves.
- Gold
It is attracted by electromagnetic waves. It may approach trainers if they are using their PokéGear.
- Silver
The units at the sides of its body generate anti-gravity energy to keep it aloft in the air.
- Crystal
The electricity emitted by the units on each side of its body cause it to become a strong magnet.
- Ruby
Magnemite attaches itself to power lines to feed on electricity. If your house has a power outage, check your circuit breakers. You may find a large number of this Pokémon clinging to the breaker box.
- Sapphire
Magnemite floats in the air by emitting electromagnetic waves from the units at its sides. These waves block gravity. This Pokémon becomes incapable of flight if its internal electrical supply is depleted.
- FireRed
It moves while constantly hovering. It discharges Thunder Wave and so on from the units at its sides.
- LeafGreen
Uses antigravity to stay suspended. Appears without warning and uses Thunder Wave and similar moves.
- Emerald
The units at its sides are extremely powerful magnets. They generate enough magnetism to draw in iron objects from over 300 feet away.
- Diamond
The units at its sides generate electromagnetic waves that keep it airborne. It feeds on electricity.
- Pearl
The units at its sides generate electromagnetic waves that keep it airborne. It feeds on electricity.
- Platinum
The faster the units at its sides rotate, the greater the magnetic force they generate.
- HeartGold
It is attracted by electromagnetic waves. It may approach trainers if they are using their PokéGear.
- SoulSilver
The units at the sides of its body generate anti-gravity energy to keep it aloft in the air.
- Black
The faster the units at its sides rotate, the greater the magnetic force they generate.
- White
The faster the units at its sides rotate, the greater the magnetic force they generate.
- Black 2
The electromagnetic waves emitted by the units at the sides of its head expel antigravity, which allows it to float.
- White 2
The electromagnetic waves emitted by the units at the sides of its head expel antigravity, which allows it to float.
- X
The units at the sides of its body generate antigravity energy to keep it aloft in the air.
- Y
It moves while constantly hovering. It discharges Thunder Wave and so on from the units at its sides.
- Omega Ruby
Magnemite attaches itself to power lines to feed on electricity. If your house has a power outage, check your circuit breakers. You may find a large number of this Pokémon clinging to the breaker box.
- Alpha Sapphire
Magnemite floats in the air by emitting electromagnetic waves from the units at its sides. These waves block gravity. This Pokémon becomes incapable of flight if its internal electrical supply is depleted.
- Sun
They gather in places where electricity is available. They can be found clinging to the steel towers used to support power lines.
- Moon
It sends out electromagnetic waves, which let it float through the air. Touching it while it's eating electricity will give you a full-body shock.
- Ultra Sun
It’s frequently the cause of power outages, which is why some power plants send out electrical signals that it can’t stand.
- Ultra Moon
Perhaps because electrical lines are often buried these days, the number of Magnemite attacks on power plants has increased.
- Let's Go, Pikachu!
It is hatched with the ability to defy gravity. It floats while emitting powerful electromagnetic waves.
- Let's Go, Eevee!
It is hatched with the ability to defy gravity. It floats while emitting powerful electromagnetic waves.
- Sword
At times, Magnemite runs out of electricity and ends up on the ground. If you give batteries to a grounded Magnemite, it'll start moving again.
- Shield
It subsists on electricity. As Magnemite flies, it emits electromagnetic waves from the units on each side of its body.

Trivia[]
- There is a villain in the anime Astro Boy that goes by the same name.
- Its original name was "Coil" and Magneton's "Recoil".
- After the introduction of the Steel type, Magnemite, its evolutions, and Togedemaru are the only Electric/Steel Pokémon.
- Also, Magnemite and its evolved forms are the only Electric/Steel types to be based on machines as Togedemaru is based on a mammal.
- Magnemite and its evolved forms share some similarities and differences with the Beldum and Klink evolutionary line.
- All three evolutionary lines are based on mechanical objects: The Magnemite evolutionary line is based on magnets, the Beldum evolutionary line is based on robots and supercomputers, and the Klink evolutionary line is based on gears.
- Stat-wise, the Magnemite evolutionary line is leaned towards the Special Attack spectrum while the Beldum and Klink evolutionary lines are leaned towards the Physical Attack spectrum.
- Magnemite and its evolutions, despite being cybernetic and artificial in nature, they
- Can express emotions, as seen in Get Along, Little Pokémon.
- Can reproduce, as seen in the aforementioned episode.
- Have a need to eat, as seen in The Poké Spokesman.
- Pre-dates the modern era, as it appears in the Ruins of Alph and appears in AZ's retelling of the Kalos War. (Magnemite and Magneton only)
- Magnemite has its own song on the Japanese Pokémon YouTube Channel. It can be seen here.
- In Generation I, Magnemite was a counterpart to Voltorb. Both were pure Electric-type Pokémon that spawned in similar locations. They both evolved at Level 30 and were based on inanimate objects. Both also debuted in Red & Blue and were also both genderless. Ever since the introduction of the Steel-type and Magnezone, the main similarities were broken.
- Despite its high-tech nature and human origin, Magnemite can be found in White Forest rather than Black City.
- Magnemite ranked 5th, among all Pokémon, in the Pokémon of the Year 2021 poll by The Pokémon Company. It also ranked 1st among all Kanto Pokémon.
- In Generation V, Magnemite was the most traded Pokémon on the GTS. This is probably due to what is known as the Magnemite chain/coil: a scheme by which players could increase the number of visitors to their Join Avenue in B2/W2 by trading Magnemite on the GTS.
- Due to the Game Boy Advance having better sound effects, both it and Magneton's cries were changed to match.
- The N64 game Pokémon Snap is the only form of a Pokémon canon that shows two Magnemite bonding, similar to a Magneton. However, when a picture is taken, they are still called Magnemite.
- Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team also showed this, but it was stated to be a failed evolution, due to the lack of a third Magnemite.
- Not counting in-game trades or usage of GO Park, Magnemite and Magneton are the only Steel-type Pokemon available in Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee.
Origin[]
Magnemite is likely based on horseshoe magnets and satellites (the magnets replace the solar panels powering many satellites).
Etymology[]
Magnemite comes from "magnet, "magnetite" (a naturally magnetic iron ore), “satellite", and mite (referring to a small object).
Koiru comes from "coil".
