Biology[]
Physiology[]
Concept artwork of Jirachi.
Jirachi is a small and light Pokémon reminiscent of a shooting star. The lower part of Jirachi's body is white, although its yellow head makes up a large part of its body, bearing the shape of a three-pointed star, one of which points upwards and two of which protrude to the sides. A turquoise strip of paper hanging at the tip of all three points of Jirachi's head, serving as notes on which wishes can be written.
Jirachi with its hidden eye opened.
It has large, black eyes with blue stripes running down them, resembling tears. Jirachi has a hidden eye on its stomach that is normally closed and only visible as a semicircular line, although if the eye opens, one can see a yellow sclera with a green iris in the middle. Jirachi also has two small but wide arms and two long, yellow wings that resemble the ends of a gift bow.
In its Shiny form, Jirachi's white body and face are shaded reddish, and the strips of paper at the tips of its head are red.
Special abilities[]
Like most Mythical Pokémon, Jirachi's statistics are above average, having a higher Attack, Defense, and Speed. Jirachi can fight opponents while it is sleeping, using mainly Psychic-type move. Jirachi can use physical moves such as Zen Headbutt and special moves such as Psychic and Future Sight.
The Pokémon sleeps most of its life, collecting wishes on its notes during this time, and only wakes up every thousand years to then grant people's wishes. This is reflected in battle by two attacks that are characteristic of Jirachi. Firstly, it has the normal attack Wish, which it can use to heal itself or a switched-in Pokémon from its team, and secondly its signature move Doom Desire, which involves it making a wish and then inflicting damage to the target after two turns.
Jirachi's Ability, Serene Grace, doubles the chance of a move's secondary effect occurring, therefore increasing the chance of a status condition.
Behavior[]
Jirachi is said to fulfill a desire to people who really need it, and will appear when one least expects. Jirachi is always sleeping and awakens only once a week every millennium. Though, if possible, if it is captured by a Trainer, it will be awake longer than a week but will still fall asleep if needing to recharge its energy.
Evolution[]
Jirachi does not evolve.

Sprites[]
Appearances[]
Core series[]
In nearly every game in the core series, Jirachi can be obtained only through official events hosted in real life. Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version and Pokémon Platinum Version had several events that provided the opportunity to obtain Jirachi legitimately, such as at GameStop stores from February to March 2010, where it is contained in a Cherish Ball and knows its signature move, Draco Meteor.
In celebration of Pokémon's 20th Anniversary a Jirachi was available as a Mystery Gift by connecting to the internet on Pokémon X and Pokémon Y or Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire from April 1 to 24, 2016.
Anime[]
Jirachi is the title character in Pokémon: Jirachi, Wish Maker. It awakens every 1000 years when the Millennium Comet appears in the night sky. Upon awakening, it became close friends with Max and his friends. Feeling somewhat homesick, Jirachi and its new friends journeyed to its home to put it back to sleep. This Jirachi appears briefly in the introduction of Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai, in a tribute to all previous nine Pokémon films.
It also made an appearance in "Searching for a Wish!" to help grant Gemma's wish for a lush a fertile mountain.
Jirachi also made a cameo appearance in the ending credits in "Meloetta's Moonlight Serenade".
Spinoffs[]
In Pokémon Channel, Jirachi appears on the night of the sixth day, an event that can occur after obtaining the missing fifth part of "Pichu Bros. in Party Panic!." Professor Oak notices that Jirachi has arrived at the player's house, shocking him. Jirachi goes with the player and their Pikachu to Camp Starlight, where they use the Star Projector that Oak had provided to project the complete Pichu Brothers episode and "Meowth's Party" for everyone to see. Furthermore, in European and Australian releases only, the event allows the player to download a Jirachi to a copy of Pokémon Ruby Version and Pokémon Sapphire Version.
In Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, Jirachi is referred to as a male. He fills a main role in the game, as the observer and astral carthographist of the Expedition Society, keeping in check the bodies in space to note any anomalies. Jirachi is close friends with Celebi and tries to take the player and its partner Pokémon to the rising Tree of Life, near the end of the game.
Super Smash Bros. series[]
| More information about Jirachi can be read on Smashpedia. |
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Jirachi is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Poké Balls. It uses the move Fly and leaves behind Stickers, a collectable item in the game, while it flies away. However, Jirachi is unable to learn Fly in any form of main game. In Generation III however, Jirachi can learn Mimic and can mimic Fly and/or can learn Metronome and use it to pull out Fly.
Jirachi is one of the collectable spirits in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Trivia[]
Origin[]
Jirachi is based on the idea of wishing upon a star or meteor, with some elements of genies. The paper tags on Jirachi's head refer to the tanzaku, strips of paper in the Japanese holiday Tanabata (also known as the Star Festival) on which people write wishes and attach them to bamboo plants. The period of time Jirachi is awake may also reference Tanabata, as Jirachi is only awake for seven days and Tanabata takes place on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. Its Steel typing may be in reference to iron meteors. In keeping with the Abrahamic religion theme several Hoenn Pokémon have, Jirachi may also be based on the Star of Bethlehem.
Etymology[]
Jirachi derives from желать zhelat (Russian for wish), 幸 sachi (wish, happiness, or fortune), genie, and jireh (Hebrew for "provider").
