Darumaka (Japanese: ダルマッカ, Hepburn: Darumakka) (dah-roo-MAH-kah[1]) is a Fire-type Pokémon introduced in Generation V and an Ice-type in Generation VIII.
Biology[]
Physiology[]
Unovian[]
Darumaka is a small, round, red Pokémon. Its short limbs have are identical as they are orange and have 3 digits. It has large eyes with small, dark pupils and a small, grinning mouth with three teeth. In between them, it has an orange mark on its face. It has big, yellow eyebrows and three yellow ovals on its stomach.
Galarian[]
Galarian Darumaka's snow-white coat is thicker than a Unovan Darumaka's coat. It has a pair of turquoise ice crystals in place of its eyebrows. Instead of oval-shaped markings, a pair of diamond-shaped ice crystals adorn its chest like buttons. Its face, hands, and feet are blue rather than orange. Unlike its normal form, Galarian Darumaka has a timid frown instead of a mischievous smile.
Behavior[]
Unovan[]
Darumaka have an internal fire inside their bodies. When this fire is hot, one becomes hyper, but will fall asleep when the fire itself gets low. When sleeping, they retract their limbs into their bodies, and slightly sway. While they are sleeping, they cannot be tipped over no matter how much they get pushed or pulled, like a tumbler doll, which they resemble in this slumbering state. They are also known to have very warm droppings, which ancient people put in their clothes to keep themselves warm. They normally dwell in deserts. During the day, these Pokémon are extremely hyperactive; the fires burning within their bodies keep them constantly running about. Upon awakening, the creatures appeared dazed for a while, but were otherwise completely healthy. Darumaka subsist on insects, arachnids, and whatever plants they can find in the harsh desert. Darumaka add small mammals onto this list.
Galarian[]
Unlike their Unovan counterparts, Galarian Darumaka have lost their ability to produce heat from their flame sacs because of constant living in snowy areas. This has left Galarian Darumaka generating cold air instead of heat. Galarian Darumaka become more energetic if they get colder and will use their icy breaths to create snowballs for ammunition. Galarian Darumaka also enjoy eating Berries produced by Snover. This leads to them preying on Snover, often causing them to be driven off by Abomasnow. They usually reside in freezing mountainsides.
Natural abilities[]
Unovan Darumaka can generate heat and breathe out flames, whereas Galarian Darumaka can generate chilly cold air and turn it into snowball.
Unovan Darumaka has hot droppings, which can keep people warm, so ancient people used to put them inside their clothes to prevent heat loss during winters.
Evolution[]
Darumaka evolves into Darmanitan at level 35, while Galarian Darumaka evolves into Galarian Darmanitan with the use of an Ice Stone.

Appearances[]
Anime[]
Darumaka appear in "Saving Darmanitan from the Bell!" when Ash, Iris and Cilan visit a European-esque town. They tend to steal the food out of the citizens, which was shown earlier when Axew and Pikachu were about to eat their food at the start of the episode.
Trivia[]
- Darumaka can curl up into a ball, retracting its arms and feet inside of its body.
Origin[]
Darumaka is based on a Daruma doll and a macaque. Its fire typing may be inspired by Japan's Daruma Burning Ceremony in which people bring their Daruma dolls to the temple they were purchased at the end of a year and they are burned after expressing gratitude for the luck they had brought.
Galarian Darumaka is based on snowmen (which are named yuki-daruma, meaning Snow Daruma, in Japan) and monkeys or yetis. It also resembles a snowball.
Etymology[]
Darumaka comes from Daruma and macaque or makka (Japanese for "crimson").
