Torkoal (Japanese: コータス, Hepburn: Kootasu) (TOR-coal) is a Fire-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

Biology

Physiology

Torkoal is a rust-red tortoise whose black shell has seven coal vents.

Behavior

Torkoal dig through mountains in search of coal. When they find some, they will store it in their hollow shells. In battle, Torkoal burn coal for energy, releasing smoke from their shells and nostrils. The sound they make when doing so is akin to that of a locomotive horn. Torkoal communicate with using this sound, altering its pitch, duration, and volume to convey different messages. The four hexagonal indents in their shells are also speculated to be used in communication; when Torkoal burn coal, these indents glow with varying intensities depending on how much coal they are burning. The speed at which Torkoal expel smoke is indicative of their health, with healthy Torkoal spewing it out quickly and forcefully.

When threatened, Torkoal will use the move Smokescreen by exhaling black soot out of their orifices. Then, while attackers are blinded by smoke, they will attempt to flee as quickly as they can (albeit, this isn't very swiftly). Larger Torkoal require more coal to stay active, but can also withstand longer periods of time without any of it; they will eventually become unable to move and die without fuel, however. Torkoal are common sights in coal mines, with dozens congregating around areas of exposed coal.

Natural abilities

It digs through mountains in search of coal, which it stuffs in the vents and burns inside its shell for energy. The vents can be used to blow out volcanic ash when Torkoal is in danger or angry, providing a smokescreen for its retreat. It may also blow smoke through its nostrils, sounding very like a locomotive. It consumes extra coal to prepare for a battle, but grows weaker as its fire dies down.

In the anime series, Torkoal is voiced by Shin-ichiro Miki in Japanese and by Maddie Blaustein and later Billy Beach in English after she passed away. Ash's Torkoal was found being picked on by Steel-type Pokémon.

Ash battled the final member of the Battle Pyramid using his Torkoal. Torkoal lost to Brandon's Registeel. They rematched several times before Ash's victory.

Trivia

• Torkoal shares its species name with Rolycoly. They are both known as the Coal Pokémon.
• Contrary to what its Pokédex entries imply, wild Torkoal can never be found in Oreburgh City's coal mine in Generation IV.

Origin

Torkoal is based on a tortoise with some elements of furnaces and stoves as well as having some elements of burning coal.

Etymology

Torkoal is a portmanteau of tortoise and coal.
