Seadra (Japanese: シードラ, HepburnShiidora) (SEE-dra[1]) is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It evolves from Horsea.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

It has a long snout and a number of spikes on its head, to the sides and on the top, and a pair of pectoral fins on the sides of its head. Its torso is covered with rough, cream-colored scales. Seadra's dorsal fins have sharp, pointed, cream-colored tips from which it exudes venom. Seadra also has a large tail which is generally coiled up. Seadra's quills can render its victim unconscious.

Behavior[]

Seadra have a violent temper. They hook their tail onto rocks or coral branches to rest, preventing them from being swept away. Seadra can also use their fins and tails to swim backwards. When hunting, Seadra create whirlpools to trap and disorient prey. Whirlpools from larger Seadra can be powerful enough to capsize fishing boats. They swallow food whole using their long snouts, and can even suck in prey larger than these openings with great force.

After the female Seadra gives birth, the male Seadra will take care of the young and its nest. It will attack those who venture too near to its children.

Natural abilities[]

Seadra's spines provide protection for their bodies, and their fins and bones are prized as traditional medicine ingredients. They are also extremely accurate in shooting water from their mouths.

Evolution[]

Seadra evolves from Horsea at level 32. Seadra evolves into Kingdra, when traded while holding the Dragon Scale.

Appearances[]

Anime[]

Ash Ketchum battled Mandi's Seadra in his first battle in the Indigo League. Cissy used a Seadra while Ash was participating in her target test in Fit to be Tide. A Seadra was one of the Pokémon that were captured and cloned by Mewtwo in Mewtwo Strikes Back. The Seadra clone is seen again in Mewtwo Returns. Juan, the leader of the Sootopolis City Gym, also owns a Seadra.

Manga[]

In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Silver had a Seadra as a part of his team, although it was not shown. During the events of Volume 9, Silver secretly sends Seadra to Gold via trade for his Poliwhirl, triggering Seadra's evolution into Kingdra.

Trivia[]

  • Seadra and its evolutionary relatives share their category with the Dratini evolution line members, Salamence, and Kalosian Goodra. All are known as the Dragon Pokémon.
    • Even though it is classified as the Dragon Pokémon, it is not part Dragon type.
  • Seadra is the only non-Poison-type Pokémon to have the ability Poison Point.
  • Seadra, Cascoon, Vigoroth, Swadloon and Spewpa are the only Pokémon who lose their ability when they first evolve, but regain it back when evolving again.

Origin[]

Seadra is most likely based on a seahorse, however, it also may be based on squids and archer fish as it is able to spit ink and shoot water at passing bugs. The latter aspect may also make it based on a water gun. It may also take inspiration from how some species of seahorses are sometimes referred to as "sea dragons" ass well as there being a Japanese myth stating that seahorse will turn into a dragon after living for a century. Its spines filled with poison may be based on a lionfish.

Etymology[]

Seadra may come from seahorse and hydra.
