Chespin (ハリマロン Harimaron) is a Grass-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VI. It is the Grass-type Starter of Kalos.

Biology

Physiology

Chespin seems to resemble a porcupine or hedgehog. It has a tough spiky green chestnut-like shell covering its head and back. Chespin has brown fur, a large orange triangle-shaped nose, black oval-shaped eyes, and a toothy grin. It has sharp claws on its large feet, and an orange tip on the end of its pointed green tail.

Behavior

Despite having a curious nature that tends to get it in trouble, Chespin keeps an optimistic outlook and doesn't worry about small details.

Evolution

Chespin can be evolved into Quilladin starting at level 16, and into Chesnaught starting at level 36.

Clemont's Chespin.

Main article: Clemont's Chespin

Clemont received a Chespin from Professor Sycamore after it helped him defeat Team Rocket. Chespin also has a heated rivalry with Serena's Pancham throughout Ash's journey.

Trivia

  • Chespin is the first Grass-type starter Pokémon that is not reptile-based but based on a mammal, in this case a rodent or a marsupial. Judging by its Japanese, English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Korean name, it appears to be based on a hedgehog.
  • Chespin bears a resemblance to the Generation V starter, Oshawott.
  • Chespin's evolution line is based off the warrior class in various RPG games.
  • Chespin is the first and so far only Grass-type starter Pokémon to not have been captured by Ash.
  • In Super Smash Bros., Chespin is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Pokéballs. During this time, it uses the move Seed Bomb.

Origin

Chespin is based on a hedgehog and a chestnut.

Etymology

Chespin's name comes from chestnut (a hard shelled nut) and pin.

In Japanese version, Harimaron is a combination of 蝟/harinezumi (hedgehog), 針/hari (needle), and marron (French for chestnut).
