Combee (Japanese: ミツハニー, HepburnMitsuhanii) (COMB-bee[1]) is a Bug/Flying-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Combee is a three-headed Pokémon resembling a bee. Its three heads are shaped like hexagonal honeycomb, with each upper 'bee' having one wing and one antenna each and the lowermost 'bee' having a striped abdomen.

Gender differences[]

Females have a red triangle on their bottom head while males do not.

Behavior[]

Combee are able to stick together and build a large wall for protection and defense. They usually travel in swarms and they bring honey and other food sources to their leader, Vespiquen. Combee eat just enough to survive, giving all of the surplus to their queens; each head has a slightly different nectar preference. They are diurnal; at night, Combee colonies rest by stacking their bodies together to form hives protecting the queen. Their hexagonal bodies allow no space for intruders to slip through when they stack together. About a third of the Combee in a hive will be awake at any given time, keeping watch over their colony.

Additionally, each head has its own preference on honey. Combee will attack any potential threats, not hesitating to give their lives to protect their queens. Combee are entirely subservient to their queens’ orders; should the queens go missing, their colonies will fly about worriedly in search of them, not eating or resting until they are found. Female Combee can be distinguished by a red mark on their main heads; only 1 in 8 Combee are female.

Evolution[]

Female Combee evolve into Vespiquen when they reach level 21; male Combee do not evolve. The Evolutionary line slot in this Pokémon's Infobox only refers to females. For males, assume that the slot reads "No evolutionary line".

Appearances[]

Anime[]

Combee debuted at the end of the episode The Grass-Type is Always Greener! where Ash and Co. along with Cheryl, would follow it in the next episode. Combee had an even bigger part in An Angry Combeenation! where they guarded their colony and served their leader, Vespiquen.

Combee made a cameo in the Pokémon movie The Rise of Darkrai.

Trivia[]

CombeeConceptArt

Combees original design as shown in the Pokémon Ultra Sun & Pokémon Ultra Moon Edition: The Official National Pokédex book.

  • Combee is one of the five Pokémon whose evolution depends on its gender. It shares this trait with Burmy, Kirlia, Snorunt and Salandit.
  • Similar to Magneton and Dugtrio, Combee is made of three Pokémon joined. However, no single-bodied pre-evolution for Combee exists.
    • It is unknown what happens to a female Combee's other two heads when it becomes Vespiquen.
    • Also, they are the only gender specific evolution to have aesthetic differences.
  • Its BST is the lowest of all flying types.
  • According to an interview with Ken Sugimori, Combee was originally going to have the same honeycomb shape, but instead of small bees in between, there were bee larvae with pacifiers in their mouths. The idea was scrapped because the designers thought that is was "too gross".

Origin[]

Combee is based on a honeybee and the hexagonal honeycombs they make.

The gender imbalance is analogous to the distribution of bee castes; female Combee represent virgin queens while males represent the worker and drone caste. The reason that there are more male Combee than females is based on the fact that real bees usually have a single queen (when another queen bee is born, the reigning queen will often kill her rival before it develops) and many male drones, and an even greater number of worker bees.

Additionally, the reason that only females evolve is based on the fact that worker bees are annual creatures whose lives are solely devoted in performing various honey gathering and colony maintenance tasks, while drone bees only exist to mate with the queen. When a drone successfully mates with the queen, the drone dies from having their reproductive organs ripped out; otherwise the drone will be evicted from the colony upon the arrival of the upcoming winter.

In real-life, all worker bees are technically females. The non-breeding roles of Combee, including male Combee, reflect that of worker bees.

Etymology[]

Combee comes from a combination of honeycomb and bee. It also sounds similar to combine, as Combee looks like a combined cluster of honeybees.

Its Japanese name, Mitsuhoney, comes from the words 蜜蜂 mitsubacchi (honey bee) and the English word honey.
