Jynx (Japanese: ルージュラ, Hepburn: Ruujura) (JINX) is an Ice/Psychic-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

Biology

Physiology

Jynx is a purple-skinned humanoid Pokémon. It has long blonde hair and a flowing lower body which resembles a red dress, the top of which has a red chestplate outlined in gold that most closely resembles female breasts, as well as luscious pink lips. Its hands have five fingers each and its arms are white. Jynx is a female-only species with no male counterpart.

Jynx originally had black skin, which was dropped due to the resemblance to blackface and the response of a small group of activists to the resemblance.

Behavior

Jynx are found in secluded, snowy areas. Though rare, they seem to become more common during strong blizzards. As Jynx walk, they sway their hips alluringly. Depending on their emotions, they may move in slightly different manners. Their strange movements compel those who see them to move with them, dancing in unison. Those moving may not even realize they are swaying their hips until someone else (who is probably also dancing) points it out to them. Jynx use their dancing to talk to one another.

However, they also have a form of oral speech, which sounds ​uncannily similar to a foreign human language. For this reason, some musicians have written songs specifically for Jynx to sing. Despite their curious behavior, Jynx are kind Pokémon. As they walk and sway, people and Pokémon alike subconsciously follow them. During blizzards, they will often lead these hypnotized beings to safety away from the cold. Then, they disappear almost as quickly as they appeared. When Jynx walk, they mysteriously leave no footprints in the snow. In rural, barren regions of Galar, Jynx are known in folklore as Queens of Ice and are worshiped for their beautiful singing and dancing.

Natural abilities

Jynx can have the ability Oblivious or the ability Forewarn. Oblivious grants Jynx immunity to infatuation. Forewarn allows Jynx to identify the opponent's move with the highest attack power.

Evolution

Jynx is the evolved form of Smoochum as of level 30.

Jynx appeared early in the anime, but because of her black skin, episodes where she made small cameos had them cut out in US airings of the dub until the Advanced Generation series, when she had her purple skin.

Trivia

• Jynx originally appeared as having black skin, but the companies behind Pokémon changed its skin color to purple, as some players complained that it appeared to be a racist Pokémon reminiscent of blackface (blackface is the act of painting the face black and making the lips appear large and pink as a derogatory portrayal of Black people). It has also received criticism for resembling a drag queen (a male that dresses as a female for the purpose of entertainment).
• Jynx has the longest cry of any Pokémon.
  • This excludes the glitch Pokémon, ♀.
• In Pokémon HOME, there is an unused Jynx cry with reverb similar to Mega Evolved Pokémon. It is possible that this is a scrapped cry and that Jynx may have originally gotten a Mega Evolution.
  • Further proving this point, Jynx is one of the Pokémon who had its trademark updated around the release of Pokémon X & Y. Unlike the other Pokémon who got their trademark updated, Jynx did not receive any alternate form.

Origin

Jynx is based on the Yama-uba. The Yama-uba share many traits with Jynx, such as having no feet, living in snowy mountains (hence why Jynx is part Ice type), long bright hair, a red dress, and are all female. Jynx may also be based on ganguro (a Japanese fashion style mostly popular with women that involves heavy tanning and questions traditional Japanese ideas of beauty), a stereotypical opera singer (based on Brunhilde, a Viking character from Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle), or simply someone suffering from frostbite (hence its odd skin color).

Etymology

Jynx is a stylized spelling of jinx, meaning curse and, as an interjection, used when two people say the same at once, both alluding to its Psychic type.

Ruujura comes from rouge (French for red, referring to its dress or to lipstick) and the feminine suffix la.
