Ribombee (Japanese: アブリボン, HepburnAburibon) (rih-BOMB-bee[1]) is a bug/fairy-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VII.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Ribombee is a tiny, insectoid Pokémon with a large head, slightly smaller body, and thin arms and legs. It is covered in fluffy, yellow fur with a white face, lower body, and a tuft of white fur on its back. It has big eyes with a one white and one brown square speck in the center. Over its eyes are white hairs similar to eyelashes, and it has two black antennae. Around its neck is a brown scarf with a needle-like projection on the front. Two wings nearly as large as its body sprout from its back. The wings are white with three brown loop designs near the base. Its four thin limbs have bulbous hands or feet.

Behavior[]

Ribombee create different varieties of puffs by rolling up pollen, which can be used for food and battles. When not in use, it sticks pollen to its fur. During rain, it takes shelter in the hollow of a tree and stays there until the rain recedes. It hates rain, as rain makes pollen damp and reveals itself only after a few clear days pass by in a row. They seem to a appreciate acts of kindness as Lana gave it the flower bracelet repaying her and Mallow with two pollen puffs.

Natural abilities[]

Ribombee can predict the weather by feeling the moisture levels and wind direction. They have the ability to understand the feelings of people and Pokémon.

Evolution[]

Ribombee evolves from Cutiefly starting at level 25.

Pokédex entries[]

  • Sun

It rolls up pollen into puffs. It makes many different varieties, some used as food and others used in battle.

  • Moon

Some of Ribombee’s pollen puffs are highly nutritious. They are sometimes sold as supplements.

  • Ultra Sun

Rain makes pollen damp, so Ribombee hates rain. When it sees ominous clouds, it finds a hollow in a tree, where it waits stock-still.

  • Ultra Moon

It can predict the weather from moisture levels and wind direction. Ribombee only reveals itself when there are a few clear days in a row.

  • Sword

It makes pollen puffs from pollen and nectar. The puffs' effects depend on the type of ingredients and how much of each one is used.

  • Shield

Ribombee absolutely hate getting wet or rained on. In the cloudy Galar region, they are very seldom seen.

  • Scarlet

Ribombee can sense when people or Pokémon are feeling down, and it will cheer them up with handmade pollen puffs.

  • Violet

Pollen puffs created by skilled Ribombee can relieve fatigue, making the puffs a popular commodity.

    Trivia[]

    • No other Pokémon has same type matchup of Bug/Fairy-type as Ribombee and its pre-evolution Cutiefly.
    • Ribombee and Polteageist tie for the shortest fully evolved Pokémon, both being 8 inches tall.

    Origin[]

Ribombee is based on a bee or a Bombyliidae. Its Fairy typing brings fairies and sprites to mind. Its use of pollen as an attack not only references how bees carry pollen to pollinate other flowers and use it for food, but may also reference how some fairies in folklore use "pixie dust" as a form of magic. It may also be a pun on the fairyfly species.

    Etymology[]

Ribombee comes from ribbon (referring to its clothing like fuzz), bombyliidae, and bee (due to its process of pollination and small appearance).

    Names in other languages[]

    • Japanese: Aburibbon - mix of tsuriabu (bee fly), lovely / fairy and ribbon
    • French: Rubombelle - mix of ruban (ribbon), belle (beautiful) and Bombyliidae
    • Chinese: 蝶结萌虻 (Simplified) / 蝶結萌虻 (Traditional) - mix of 蝴蝶結 / 蝴蝶结 (bowknot), (cute) and 蜂虻 (bee fly)
    • Spanish: Ribombee
    • German: Bandelby - mix of band (ribbon), hummel (bumblebee) and Bombyliidae
