Vikavolt (Japanese: クワガノソ, HepburnKuwaganon) is a Bug/Electric-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VII. It is the final evolved form of Grubbin and evolves from Charjabug after being exposed to a unique magnetic field or, in Generation VIII, a Thunder Stone.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Vikavolt is a beetle-like Pokémon that is equipped with a pair of long mandibles. It has a orange-colored face and two yellow robotic eyes. Vikavolt's entire carapace is dark blue in color while its abdomen has a light gray coloration. Its wings are flat and transparent with a light blue color. Short spikes each line along the inside of Vikavolt's mandibles.

Behavior[]

Vikavolt produces electricity through an electric sac within its abdomen. It is able to release its electrical energy from its mouth by firing it as powerful beams, similar to a railgun. Vikavolt can clamp onto a Charjabug and use it as an extra battery in order to launch more powerful electric blasts. It uses these blasts to protect against bird Pokémon.Vikavolt will also grasp their pre-evolutions, Charjabug, in their legs as they fly, using them as additional energy sources (since Vikavolt are defending their relatives by doing this, the Charjabug usually don't mind). However, the extra weight slows them down somewhat and makes it harder for them to fly.

Vikavolt shares a strong rivalry with Pinsir.

Natural abilities[]

Vikavolt has the ability Levitate, which makes it immune to any damaging Ground-type moves.

Evolution[]

Grubbin evolves at level 20 into Charjabug. Charjabug evolves into Vikavolt when leveled up at Vast Poni Canyon.

In the Galar Region, Vikavolt now evolves from Charjabug via a Thunder Stone since there aren't any special magnetic fields available.

Pokédex entries[]

  • Sun

It zips around, on sharp lookout for an opening. It concentrates electrical energy within its large jaws and uses it to zap its enemies.

  • Moon

It produces electricity via an electrical organ in its abdomen. It overwhelms bird Pokémon with shocking beams of electrical energy.

  • Ultra Sun

It has an organ that generates electricity in its abdomen. It concentrates energy in its strong jaws and fires off powerful jolts of electricity.

  • Ultra Moon

Vikavolt flusters opponents with acrobatic flying maneuvers. This creates an opening for it to deliver an electric beam attack.

  • Sword

It builds up electricity in its abdomen, focuses it through its jaws, and then fires the electricity off in concentrated beams.

  • Shield

If it carries a Charjabug to use as a spare battery, a flying Vikavolt can rapidly fire high-powered beams of electricity.

  • Scarlet

Displaying exceptional mobility, it weaves between trees and shoots down bird Pokémon with its electromagnetic beams.

  • Violet

When carrying a Charjabug, Vikavolt can receive electricity from it and then rapidly fire powerful electromagnetic beams from its large jaws.

Trivia[]

  • Vikavolt and Pinsir share the same species category, both being known as the Stag Beetle Pokémon.
    • This extends to one of Pinsir's Pokémon Trading Cards, stating that its greatest rival in Alola is Vikavolt.
  • Vikavolt is the fifth Electric type to have the Ability Levitate. It is also the only Pokémon introduced in Generation VII that has this Ability.
  • Vikavolt's Pokémon Shield entry in the Pokédex implies that it will carry a Charjabug around to use as a spare battery to fire off powerful electric beams. While there is no move associated with this behavior, Charjabug's unique ability, Battery, can aid Vikavolt in a similar way by making its already hard hitting Special moves even stronger.
  • Vikavolt is one of the three Bug-type Pokémon that can learn Fly, the other two being Volcarona and Genesect.
    • Interestingly, none of these Pokémon are part Flying-type.
  • Vikavolt's base 145 Special Attack is the highest of all Bug-type Pokémon.
    • Its Attack and Defense also drop slightly when it completes its evolution from Charjabug (losing 12 and 5 points, respectively).

Origin[]

Vikavolt is based off a stag beetle, with its huge pincers, compared to its body. It is also likely based off a railgun due to its association with electricity and long, straight mandibles.

Etymology[]

Vikavolt may come from V.I.K (short for Voltage Improvement Kit), wicga (Old English for insect), vice grip, and volt.

Its Japanese name, Kuwaganon, is a portmanteau of 鍬形虫 (kuwagatamushi, stag beetle) and cannon.

Names in other languages[]

  • French: Lucanon (mix of lucane (stag beetle) and canon (cannon).
  • Spanish: Vikavolt
  • German: Donarion (mix of donner (thunder) and ion).
