Rattata (Japanese: コラッタ, HepburnKoratta) (ruh-TA-tah[1]) is a Normal-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I, and a Dark/Normal-type introduced in Generation VII.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Alolan Rattata concept art

Concept artwork of Alolan Rattata, two of which are alongside an Alolan Raticate boss.

Rattata is rat-like, with large incisors, a slight hump on its back towards the rear, a slightly pudgy belly, and a whisker on both sides. Female Rattata have shorter whiskers than the males. The fur of a normal variant is purple, with a white or cream colored underside: the fur of an Alolan variant is black with dark cram underside. Rattata have red eyes, with no obvious pupils. The tail is long, and curled slightly at the tip. Rattata have three-toed paws, which are the same color as its underbelly.

Rattata that live in the Alola region have black fur instead of the usual purple. Their undersides are now a darker beige color and their fur is much scruffier, leaving their whiskers as tufts that resemble a moustache. The inside of their ears is also a dark blue color. Although quadrupedal, it is able to stand on its hind legs.

Natural abilities[]

Rattata's teeth grow very quickly and they can survive almost anywhere. It's happy to nest just about anywhere. They also utilize their teeth so they can use attacks such as Super Fang and Bite. Rattata is always on the alert. Even while asleep, Rattata constantly moves its ears to listen around.

Alolan Rattata are very aware of their surroundings, even changing the way they act in order to evade Yungoos. They are nocturnal and form big nests with an Alolan Raticate leader. They are known to sneak into people's homes and steal food, fresh or spoiled, while returning the food to their dens where it is either stored or given to the Raticate leader of the den.

Evolution[]

Rattata evolves into Raticate at level 20.

Alolan Rattata evolves into Alolan Raticate at level 20 during the night.

Trivia[]

  • Rattata originally had a k at the end of its name.
  • Rattata is the first pure Normal-type in the National Pokédex order.
  • Rattata, Pikachu, Raichu, Sandshrew and Sandslash are all known as the Mouse Pokémon.
    • Despite its classification, Rattata appears to be based off a rat, rather than a mouse.
  • Every Generation has a two-stage, Normal-type Pokémon based off a small mammal to be found early in the game and commonly encountered thereon. Rattata is the one from the First Generation.
  • A Rattata has the ability to use the F.E.A.R tactic. A plan that can have a very low level Rattata beat any Pokémon (except Ghost-types). The Rattata holds a Focus Sash and has to know Endeavor and Quick Attack. The Rattata is attacked and would faint unless holding the Focus Sash which holds it to one HP. Rattata then uses Endeavor, making the Pokémon the move hit go down to one HP. Rattata then uses Quick Attack and unless the other Pokémon uses Quick Attack, Protect, Detect or a priority move Rattata will knock out the other Pokémon.
  • In Pokémon Colosseum, Rattata's Shiny coloration has an orange body with a green tongue, instead of its usual green body with an indigo tongue.
  • Rattata's species was a Rat Pokémon, but was changed to Mouse in further games.

Origin[]

Rattata is based on several species of rodents such as rats and mice. Its large ears resemble those of the dumbo rat.

Alolan Rattata resembles the black rat, brown rat, or Polynesian rat, all of which are invasive rat species in Hawaii. Its relationship with Yungoos references the real life relation of mongooses and rats in Hawaii, as the former were introduced to Hawaii to lessen the latter's population, but ironically caused both species to become invasive. The shape of its whiskers resembles the knot of a hokkamuri, a cloth wrapped around the head and tied under nose as a form of disguise, typically worn by thieves in Japanese media for comedic effect.

Etymology[]

Rattata may come from rat and attack. This is more clear in its beta name where a 'k' is placed at the end of its name, making it sound similarly to "Rat Attack". It may also come from rat-a-tat (an onomatopoeia for a tapping noise), which may reference the noise of a rat scurrying inside walls or gnawing on wood.

Names in other languages[]

Rattata's name includes the words rat and possibly attack, considering its original name was going to be Rattatak. Koratta, the Japanese name, comes from rat and the prefix ko, meaning small.
