Donphan (Japanese: ドンファン, HepburnDonfan) (DON-fan[1]) is a Ground-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Donphan is a gray, elephant-like Pokémon with a thick, black band of hide running down the length of its back and extending to the tip of its long trunk, resembling a car tire. This tough hide prevents regular attack from inflicting even a scratch. A pair of white tusks, which are smaller on the female, extend from the corners of its mouth. It has thin, elongated ears held out almost perpendicular to its body. Its four short legs are each encircled with a broken, black band and have three claws.

Donphan has relatives in the past and future; the past variant is known as Great Tusk, while the future variant is known as Iron Treads.

Behavior[]

Donphan's behavior was mostly seen in the anime. It likes to use moves like Rollout. As a form of attacking, becoming impossible to stop and able to demolish houses, as well as by males to establish dominance. The male Donphan have rolling competitions to demonstrate their toughness to the females. It has been demonstrated that Donphan has a keen sense of smell, capable of sniffing out a gem known as amberite. Donphan travels in herds with a ranking system. The larger its tusks, the higher its rank in the herd.

Habitat[]

They live in rough, mountainous terrain.

Abilities[]

Its main ability sturdy prevents it from being knocked out in 1 hit, while sand veil boosts its evasion in sandstorm and makes it harder to hit. It may also have a decent sense of smell.

Gender differences[]

Male Donphan have longer tusks than the females. The tusks also seem to show leadership ranks, the bigger the tusks, the higher the rank.

Evolution[]

Donphan is the evolved form of Phanpy, which evolves at level 25.

Trivia[]

Donfan2

"Donfan" instead of "Donphan".

  • Donphan and Tyranitar have the same species. They are both known as the Armor Pokémon.
  • Pokémon Crystal is the only known game in which Donphan lifts up its trunk.
  • Kenta Miyake, who plays Giovanni in the original Japanese anime series, voices Donphan in both the Japanese and English-language versions of the anime.
  • The Trading Cards for the first Pokémon movie erroneously use Donphan's Japanese name: Donfan.
  • The names Phanpy and Donphan may be derived from the character names Pompy and (Tom) Doniphan from the classic western film, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. This was mentioned in a Players Pulse letter in Nintendo Power Magazine by Taylor T. Carlson, a fan of the games.
  • In the Pokémon Deluxe Essential Handbook for Generation VI, Donphan is listed as a Normal-type.
  • All non Korean/Japanese versions of Gold do not have Donphan, it is replaced by Ursaring as a version exclusive. This error was corrected in the remakes.
  • In Pokémon GO, Donphan is one of the few Pokémon that can have a CP of 3000 or more that is not a Mythical or Legendary.

Origin[]

Donphan resembles an adult elephant, but may also be based on the Pygmy Elephant due to its small stature. The texture on its back and trunk resemble the treads of an all-terrain tires, Donphan even resembling one when curling up to use attacks. It's resemblance to a tire may reference the tough hides of elephants.

Etymology[]

Donphan and its Japanese name, Donfan, is a combination of -don (a suffix meaning 'lord' in Spanish), -odon (a suffix meaning 'tooth' in ancient Greek, referring to Donphan's tusks) and elephant.
