Galvantula (Japanese: デンチュラ, HepburnDenchura) (gal-VAN-choo-luh[1]) is a Bug/Electric-type Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Galvantula is a large quadrupedal arachnid-like Pokémon that resembles a tarantula. Unlike normal arachnids, Galvantula only has four legs rather than eight. Its rounded furry body is mainly a vivid yellow color, with a grayish purple underbelly and stripes running along the back of its abdomen. It has deep blue tufts of fur sprouting from its sides. Its four hairy legs are blue and covered with yellow fur. Its has two large round blue eyes with black pupils, and four simple eyes on its forehead.

In its shiny variant, Galvantula retains its yellow coloration. However, this time, Galvantula's hair tufts stripe patterns, and eyes are now dark blue in color.

Behavior[]

Galvantula live within forests and caves in large swarms known as “clusters.” The borders of a Galvantula cluster's territory is clearly marked by a netting of electrified webs that deters foes from approaching. They will lay down stunning webs near the nests of avian Pokémon to catch chicks that are still poor at flying. As a secondary measure, these Pokémon have very strong mandibles and are capable of pinning down struggling foes until they succumb to paralysis in their silk prisons. Additionally, they can even fire charged bristles from their abdomens to paralyze fleeing prey, leaving them stunned for up to three days. After taking down prey, Galvantula will then proceed to consume their meals over the course of a few days. Despite their menacing appearances, Galvantula are not aggressive Pokémon. They tend to ignore anything that they do not consider prey, including humans. However, Galvantula are fiercely protective of their clusters; angering a single individual in a group will cause the entire swarm to attack the aggressor.

Special abilities[]

Galvantula is able to generate electrically charged threads in order to electrocute and immobilize prey. These threads are released from Galvantula's fangs and can convert into a larger net.

Galvantula is able to release electrified hairs from its body while during battle. Anyone who comes in contact with these hairs will feel major paralysis that can last for three whole days and nights.

Evolution[]

Galvantula is the evolved form of Joltik, as of level 36.

Trivia[]

  • Galvantula was among eight Pokémon revealed on the show Oha Suta on June 27, 2010. It was officially revealed on the October issue of Coro Coro on September 11, 2010.
  • Galvuantula is the fourth Pokémon with the appearance of a spider, the others being Spinarak, Ariados and Joltik.
  • When put to sleep in the main Generation V games, Galvantula's eyes do not close, unlike most other Pokémon.

Origin[]

As seen in its general shape as well as its name, Galvantula is based on a Tarantula.

Etymology[]

Galvantula comes from galvanize and tarantula.

Its Japanese name, Denchura, is likely a combination of 電気 (denki, electricity) or 電柱 (denchū, lightpole) and tarantula.
