Celebi (Japanese: セレビィ, HepburnSerebī) (SEL-ih-bee[1]) is a Psychic/Grass-type Mythical Pokémon[1] introduced in Generation II.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Celebi is small, primarily bright green, fairy-like/insectoid Pokémon. It has long arms, small paws, a round, gracefully plump body, and short, thin legs with rounded feet. Its round head is shaped similarly to a flower bulb, extended upward in a left stroke that curls. Celebi's round, bright teal-blue eyes, bordered by black markings, are rather large, compensating most of its face, and it has a small mouth. Extending from its round head are two small, slightly curled, stringy antennae with teal tips. From its upper-back, two translucent white moth-like wings that are short and small sprout, extending only halfway up its arm length. It flutters its wings to fly, but levitates most of the time as well using its psychic powers.

Behavior[]

Celebi is a mysterious and elusive Pokémon, very rarely seen by humans. It is said to come from the future, resides and conceals itself in deep forests, and often travels through time with its unique ability. It acts as a childlike and benevolent protector of the forest in which it lives. It has healing abilities in which it generously restores both plants and injured animals, even the wounds of humans that it trusts. It allows vegetation, such as grass and trees, to flourish.

As shown in both games, and the anime, it is very playful, joyful, and friendly toward those it gains trust with, and is loved by both Pokémon and people. According to legends about this Pokémon, is said by humans that an appearance of a Celebi means that a bright future is ahead.

Special abilities[]

Celebi's most notable ability is its time-traveling powers, which it often uses. It also possesses healing powers, and the ability to restore plantlife and let it flourish within the forest in which it protects. It has the power to guard forests, and the Pokémon that reside within.

Evolution[]

Celebi does not evolve.

Super Smash Bros. Melee[]
Celebi SSBM

Celebi in Super Smash Bros. Melee

Celebi is one of the Pokémon that can be spawned from a Poké Ball in Super Smash Bros. Melee. When a Poké Ball is thrown, there is a 1 in 251 chance of Celebi under the condition that all 25 fighters are available, all 29 stages are available, all 51 events are completed, and the score display has been unlocked by reaching 5,000 KOs. While it does not affect the ongoing battle, the thrower of the Poké Ball does unlock a bonus and trophy of Celebi.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
Celebi SSBB

Celebi in Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Celebi reprises its role as a Poké Ball Pokémon in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. There is an even rarer chance of Celebi appearing, 1 in 493, with 493 being how many species of Pokémon existed at the time of the game's release in Generation IV. Like the other "secret" Pokémon, it drops collectible items; in Celebi's case, it drops trophies.

There is both a sticker and a trophy of Celebi.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS[]

Celebi only appears as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.

Description
This Pokémon has the unique ability to travel through time to the past or future. However, the only times Celebi wants to visit are those of peace, so catching sight of Celebi in one of the beautiful forests it frequents is a good sign indeed. Perhaps it's mankind's responsibility to create the kind of time Celebi would want to visit.

Trivia[]

  • Celebi was the second Pokémon introduced who is not legitimately obtainable in any main series game as of now, the first being Mew.
    • It is possible to obtain Celebi in the Japanese version of Crystal, by placing the GS Ball on the Shrine in Ilex Forest.
  • Celebi could be obtained on the Pokémon Store on New York that opened November 16, 2001, During the first month.
  • Celebi is the only Pokémon thus far that is able to time-travel, other than Dialga.
  • In Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version, when you approach the shrine in Ilex Forest with a promotional Celebi, you will go back in time 3 years to battle Giovanni.
  • The only way to obtain a Shiny Celebi outside of Japan is through hacking or the Gamestop/GAME Event.
  • A hacked Celebi will not trigger the Zorua event in Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version. Only Celebi from the GameStop/GAME event will have the bond with the Zorua in Castelia City. This also resembles the part in the thirteenth movie, where Celebi shared a great bond with Zorua.
  • In PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, after clearing the game, in the Meeting Place, there's a sign with a code on it that, when a player enters it, allows them to encounter Celebi.
  • In celebration of Pokémon's 20th Anniversary, a Celebi could be received via mystery gift by connecting to the Internet on Pokémon X/Y & Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire from March 1 to 24, 2016.
  • Celebi's type (Psychic/Grass) is one of the few type combinations that has the max 7 weaknesses. It also shares this typing (except the types are switched around) with Exeggcute, regular Exeggutor, and Calyrex.
  • In beta development, Celebi was more inclined to being a black creature, likely originally based on Kokopelli, the Native American god of music & fertility who is also known for its trickster nature. Another beta sprite showed that it was going to be classified as Normal-type and labelled as "Plant Pokemon".

Origin[]

Celebi appears to be based on fairies, who often live in forests and represent the untamed lushness of the natural world.

It might also draw inspiration from kodama, Shintō tree spirits; being the protector and nurturer of nature and being celebrated as the deity of the forests makes it akin to a kami or godlike being, or even an embodiment and collective manifestation of nature itself.

Its nature-managing personality, along with its time traveling abilities suggests that it is a play on being the child of Mother Nature and Father Time, who are often depicted as the embodiments of the phenomena of the universe.

With its insectoid traits, it may also draw inspiration from bees, which help plantlife flourish being the main pollinators of flowers.

Etymology[]

Celebi and Serebī are a combination of celestial and being. It may also incorporate serenity (peace), 美 (bi, beauty), celebrity (as it is a Mythical Pokémon), and bee (given its insectoid appearance).
