Biology[]

Physiology[]

Espeon is a quadruped mammalian Pokémon with cat-like features. It has sleek and lilac purple fur covers its body. It has a red jewel attached to its forehead. This Pokémon's face is distinctly cat-like with a short, blunt muzzle and a tiny, triangular nose. It has long pointed ears, and whisker-like tufts of fur protruding from each side of its face just below its ears. Its eyes are deep purple and almond-shaped with white pupils. It has a slender tail that tapers and splits into two ends. Of all the Eeveelutions, Espeon resembles a small feline (such as a domestic cat) the most.

As a Shiny, Espeon has bright green fur while the insides of its ears turn blue. Its eyes and gem remain unchanged.

Behavior[]

Espeon are extremely loyal to any Trainers it considers to be worthy. Its precognitive powers enable the Pokémon to protect it and its Trainer from danger.

In popular culture, Espeon are connected with the sun and daylight, likely due to their conditions for evolution. It is said that it gathers psychic energy in its gem through sunbathing, making them poor battlers in the dark of night.

Natural abilities[]

Espeon uses the fine hair on its pelt and the gem on its head to sense air currents and predict its opponent's next move as well as the weather. When predicting an opponent's actions, the tip of its tail quivers. The gem on Espeon's forehead glows when it unleashes psychic energy from the gem and darkens when all of the built-up energy has been exhausted. Espeon builds up its psychic power by bathing in the sunlight. As such, it does not handle battles at night well, the polar opposite to is counterpart Umbreon.

Evolution[]

Espeon is one of the eight possible evolved forms of Eevee. Eevee evolves into this Eeveelution by leveling up with high friendship during the day. In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, Eevee can also evolve into Espeon by using a Sun Shard.

Trivia[]

Espeon beta gender sprites

Generation IV beta male and female Espeon

  • Espeon, alongside Umbreon, is the first new Eeveelution addition after the original Generation I trio (Vaporeon, Flareon, and Jolteon).
  • Espeon can learn Zap Cannon in Generation II. Strangely, it can't learn other weaker Electric-type moves.
  • Espeon, Sunflora and Volcarona have the same species. All of them are known as the Sun Pokémon.
  • Out of all the Eeveelutions, Espeon is the only one with fur that isn't mainly two different colors, being solid lavender.
  • In Generation II, Red] uses an Espeon, at level 73, during the final battle, making himself the first NPC player character to battle with an Eeveelution. However, it was later replaced by Lapras in Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version.
  • Espeon has remarkable resemblance to Blaze the Cat from Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog series, as they share a red gem on their foreheads as well as a cat-like face and similar lilac/lavender fur color. Unlike Blaze, however, Espeon is not associated with fire.
  • Espeon is somewhat similar to Persian, as they are both feline, first-evolutionary stage Pokémon with jewels on their foreheads.
    • This Pokémon also shares a resemblance to Delcatty, as like Persian, it is also cat-like and has thick purple fur.
  • Espeon is one of the 11 Generation II Pokémon that is an evolution of a Generation I Pokémon.
  • Espeon is one of three Eeveelutions to evolve from Eevee through strong friendship, alongside Umbreon and Sylveon.
  • In the beta version of Pokémon Gold Version and Pokémon Silver Version, Espeon's fur is yellow rather than lavender.
  • In Generation IV beta development, female Espeon was going to have shorter ears than male counterparts as gender differences.
  • This Eeveelution shares in common with Leafeon in that both evolutions of Eevee rely on bathing in sunlight to gain power.
  • In Pokémon UNITE, Espeon evolves from a female Eevee. This makes both Espeon and Sylveon the only Pokémon to be of different genders.
  • Espeon's Japanese name "エーフィ" (Eifie) has a similar pronunciation as Eevee's international name.
  • Unlike most other Eeveelutions, as Espeon's mouth is well below its muzzle, it is often hidden from view.

Origin[]

According to Motofumi Fujiwara, a key person at Game Freak, Eevee was based on a vague childhood experience he had. He described seeing an "indefinable creature" and that Eevee was based on a drawing of all that he could remember of it. Though it wasn't based on any distinct animal, Fujiwara mentioned that Eevee reminded him of a fluffy cat or dog-like creature. Each one of Eevee's evolutions are based on the same design but are made to resemble their type.[2]

Because of its feline appearance, it is mostly based on a Nekomata, a two-tailed cat yōkai (mystical spirit) of Japanese mythology that holds a variety of psychic powers, which may include the ability to foresee the future or enter someone's dreams. Additionally, it resembles an oriental cat due to its large ears and slender body. Its ears may have also drawn inspiration from a caracal or serval.

Etymology[]

Espeon's name is derived from ESP (Extrasensory Perception), which is the ability to see the future and "eon", as is followed by every evolution of Eevee. It could also be derived from "espionage" (which is the practice of spying to obtain information on an enemy, much like Espeon does by psychically predicting its foes next move with the gem on its forehead).

Names in other languages[]

  • English, Italian and Spanish: Espeon
  • French: Mentali
  • German: Psiana
  • Chinese: 太阳伊布(Mainland, simplified) / 太陽伊布(Mainland, traditional) / 太陽伊貝 (HK) / 太陽精靈 (Taiwan)
  • Korean: 에브이
