Lairon (Japanese: コドラ, Hepburn: Kodora) (LAIR-ron) is a Steel/Rock type Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

Biology

Physiology

It has a hard armor shell like Rhyhorn has. Its body is dark gray and its eyes are sky blue. Its back is covered with lots of iron armor. The sides of Lairon's lower jaw are very sharp and its two teeth are visible inside its mouth. There are two metal bands on each of Lairon's legs. The higher one is the same gray as its body, and the lower one is iron-colored.

Behavior

Lairon eat even more iron than Aron, and are also far more territorial. Unlike their communal pre-evolutions, Lairon will fight for sole feeding rights in territories. They will bash heads with one another until one of them is defeated. The sound of their duels can be heard throughout their cavern homes. In addition to digging out iron ore for food, Lairon also drink spring water rich in minerals to fortify their armor. When they comes across springs, they will often drink so much that they will be unable to eat for the rest of the day.

Their affinity for iron has led to increasingly common encounters with human miners. As Lairon are highly aggressive Pokémon, miners are advised to abandon their work if approached by one because they will not hesitate to attack if they feel threatened. Once they are satiated with iron, they will generally leave without causing any more trouble. Lairon enjoy showing off their strength by bashing their heads against boulders. They gauge their power by the size and number of sparks that fly out upon contact, as well as by the number of scratches and dents on their carapaces.

Natural abilities

Lairon has the abilities Rock Head and Sturdy. Sturdy protects it from one-hit KOs. Rock Head prevents recoil damage on Lairon. It has a rock hard armor and it can strangely learn Dragon Breath.

Evolution

Lairon is the evolved form of Aron and it evolves into Aggron at level 42.

Origin

Lairon draws inspiration from Korean mythological monster Bulgasari, which can grow from the size of a small bug to as huge as a house. This is due to its large appetite for iron, which explains how Lairon consumes minerals all the time. It also shares similarities with dinosaurs or turtles.

Etymology

Lairon may come from lairy (aggressive) and iron.
