Exploud (Japanese: バクオング, Hepburn: Bakuongu) (ecks-PLOWD) is a Normal-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

Biology

Physiology

Exploud is a squat, boxy-looking creature. Its distinguishing characteristic is the cluster of sound-pipes projecting from its body, making it resemble nothing so much as a pipe-organ mounted onto an engine-block. There is a frill of seven such pipes on the sides and back of its head; two long, flexible ones make up its tail; and it has breathing ports on its back, elbows and knees. It produces a variety of sounds through these openings, from flutelike calls to a battle-roar that can be heard for a radius of six miles. (It has been known to trigger weak earthquakes.)

Behavior

Most expect Exploud to be even louder. However, Exploud are able to control the volume of their voices with ease. Outside of battle, they are no louder than other Pokémon, choosing to communicate with whistles of different volumes and pitches from the various sound-producing organs on their bodies. They were once used to send messages between distant towns because of this. In battle, however, they reveals their true sonic capabilities.Notably, Exploud are popular Pokémon in orchestras and bands. This is because they can imitate virtually any wind instrument using their assembly of pipes and can control their pitch and volume without the need for tuning. Some musicians have also experimented with their “singing,” though this testing hasn't gone nearly as smoothly.

Natural abilities

Exploud is known to be very noisy and its cries can be heard from miles away.

Evolution

Exploud evolves from Loudred at Level 40, and is the final form of Whismur.

Exploud may be based on a woodwind or brass instrument or pipe organ with elements of speakers, dinosaurs, hippopotami, and car engines.

Etymology

Exploud's name is a portmanteau of the words "explode" and "loud".

Bakuongu, its Japanese name, likely comes from 爆音 (bakuon, the sound of an explosion), 音楽 (ongaku, music), "king," "gong," and "song."
