Appearances

Anime

Its first appearance was in Spinarak Attack, where Ash & co. trips over something very thin that it is hard to see, as well as a Spinarak. Misty is afraid of its scary face and because it is an insect.

Trivia

  • Even though Spinarak uses the patterns on its body to intimidate possible predators, it can't have the Ability Intimidate.
  • Spinarak's original shiny was a purple-pink mix all over its body, but it was later changed to have a blue body and pink fangs and legs.
  • Unlike real spiders, which are arachnids, Spinarak and its evolved form have six legs like any other insect.

Origin

Spinarak is based on the Theridion grallator, also known as the "happy-face spider", which has a similar coloration as well as having a face-like pattern on its abdomen. It may also be based on the Phidippus audax who also has a face-like pattern on its abdomen while also having a much more similar build to Spinarak.

Etymology

Spinarak is a portmanteau of spin, arachnid, and spinnerak (Afrikaans for "spider web").

Itomaru is a portmanteau of 糸 (ito, thread) and 丸 (maru, circle).
