Tympole (Japanese: オタマロ, Hepburn: Otamaro) (TIM-pohl[1]) is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation V.
Biology[]
Physiology[]
Tympole is a small aquatic tadpole-like Pokémon. Tympole has a rounded black body with a tan-colored face. It has a small grinning mouth, round black eyes, and black eyebrows that resemble musical notes. It has round blue dome-shaped blue ears on either side of its head, and a flat, ovular blue fin-like tail.
Behavior[]
Tympole live in large groups known as “circles.” The growths on either side of their heads can vibrate quickly in order to produce ultrasonic waves. These waves, though imperceptible to humans, are how Tympole communicate with one another. When threatened, a Tympole will emit a distinctive pattern and frequency of sound that only other Tympole can hear; once the rest of the circle hears the warning, they will all begin to produce the same sound. The circle will then, as a group, adjust the frequency of the sound waves they are emitting until they become audible at an earsplitting pitch to attackers. In battle, this tactic manifests as the move Round. Curiously if a single Tympole is isolated and put under stress, it will emit an initial warning sound as usual, but will not attempt to stun the opponent with a subsequent deafening pitch, instead only holding the first note. This seems to indicate that Tympole will not attack until their warning calls are “confirmed” by allies, which occurs when other Tympole replicate the starting pitch. Resonating ripples on the surface of a pond are a sure sign of a Tympole circle singing below.
Evolution[]
Tympole evolves into Palpitoad at level 25, and then into Seismitoad at level 36.

Pokémon Adventures[]
N is shown to be owning a Tympole as he used it in a match against Black, though after his Tympole lost he did not return it to its Poké Ball because he thinks that Pokémon are his friends and he shouldn't trap it in a Poké Ball.
Trivia[]
- Tympole shares the same species name with Poliwag, Poliwhirl and Poliwrath, they're all known as the Tadpole Pokémon.
Origin[]
Tympole is based on a tadpole and a loudspeaker. The bumps on its sides resemble headphones and the poison glands of toads. Its eyebrows also resemble the musical quarter note.
Etymology[]
Tympole comes from "tympanic membrane" (another name for the eardrum), "tympani" (a musical drum with a low sound), "tempo" (the speed at which music is played) and "tadpole".
Its Japanese name, Otamaro, comes from otamajakushi (a word used for both "tadpole" and "musical note") and maro (shaved eyebrows).
