Doduo (Japanese: ドードー, Hepburn: Doodoo) (doe-DOO-oh) is a Normal/Flying-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

Biology

Physiology

Doduo is a tall, bird Pokémon resembling an ostrich. It has two heads that are exactly identical. Doduo is covered in brown down and has large taloned feet.

Gender differences

The difference between a male and female Doduo is their necks. Male Doduo have black necks while females have beige necks.

Behavior

Doduo alternately bob their heads to keep balance while running. Their two heads have identical brains (though a few with differing ones have been discovered on occasion) and can communicate ​with each other through telepathy in order to accomplish common goals. The two heads take turns sleeping; while one dozes off, the other keeps watch for any potential dangers approaching. This team effort makes it difficult to catch Doduo off-guard. To defend themselves, Doduo can attack with moves such as Double Hit and Drill Peck. They are able to use both heads at once for some moves, effectively being able to target two enemies at the same time if necessary.

Natural abilities

Doduo can run very fast; however, they can't fly very well.

Evolution

Doduo evolves into Dodrio at level 31.

Trivia

• Despite being a Flying-type Pokémon, Doduo do not have wings and are often stated to be flightless. Strangely, it can still learn the HM Fly and can also learn Steel Wing.
• Even though it is the pre-evolved form of Dodrio, the Pokédex entries state on more than one occasion that it can run at about 60 mph, at most 20 mph faster than Dodrio.
• Doduo and its evolution, Dodrio, are the only Pokémon with Tangled Feet as their Hidden Ability.
• Doduo and its evolution, Dodrio, are the only Pokémon with the Run Away ability that are Flying-type.

Origin

While its name references the dodo, Doduo more resembles kiwis and ostriches as well as other flightless birds. It is also similar to the Bharunda, a two-headed bird from the Panchantara tales of India.

Etymology

Its name comes from the dodo, an extinct flightless bird, and duo which means two, as Doduo has two heads.
