Polteageist (Japanese: ポットデス, HepburnPottodesu) (POHL-tee-guyst[1]) is a Ghost-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VIII.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Polteageist resembles a purple ghost living in a teapot. It has a pair of yellow swirly eyes and a purple body. Its feet dangles at the bottom of its body as well.

Both the phony and antique versions are nearly similar to each other; the antique version has a mark on the bottom, whereas the phony does not.

Behavior[]

If it gains its Trainer's trust, Polteageist may allow its tea to be sampled. However, anyone who consumes this type of tea in large amounts will have an upset stomach.

Polteageist seeks refuge within hotels and eating establishments, camouflaging itself amongst tableware. It is able to multiple itself via transferring its own powers inside leftover tea. Because of this, Polteageist is often considered to be a pest.

Natural abilities[]

Polteageist's body is made entirely out of black tea, which is believed to have a very distinct aroma and flavor.

However if drunk too much, it may also induce indigestion, stomach aches, and even could cause a fatal death.

Pokédex entries[]

  • Sword

Phony: This species lives in antique teapots. Most pots are forgeries, but on rare occasions, an authentic work is found.
Antique: Trainers Polteageist trusts will be allowed to experience its distinctive flavor and aroma firsthand by sampling just a tiny bit of its tea.

  • Shield

Phony: Leaving leftover black tea unattended is asking for this Pokémon to come along and pour itself into it, turning the tea into a new Polteageist.
Antique: When angered, it launches tea from its body at the offender's mouth. The tea causes strong chills if swallowed.

  • Scarlet

Phony: The tea that composes Polteageist's body has a distinct and enjoyable flavor. Drinking too much, however, can be fatal.
Antique: Apparently a Polteageist's disposition is affected by the type of tea the Pokémon came from. What teapot it inhabits makes no difference.

  • Violet

Phony: These Pokémon multiply by creeping into teapots and pouring themselves into leftover tea.
Antique: Though risky to drink, this Pokémon's tea tastes delicious. Gourmets who have no fear of danger drink Polteageist tea day after day.

    Trivia[]

    • Polteageist is the first pure Ghost-type Pokémon since Generation V.
    • Polteageist is similar to Rotom and Honedge:
      • All are based on the concept of a ghosts/specters living inside an inanimate object.
      • Polteageist, Rotom, and Honedge are all Ghost types, with Polteageist having a single type as Rotom is part Electric type and Honedge is part Steel type.
    • Despite being called the "Black Tea" Pokémon, the color of Polteageist's core body is purple, presumably to avoid the controversy incident relating to Jynx's future anime adaption appearances as of Advance Generation or possibly because black tea is not actually black in color.
    • Polteageist and Ribombee tie for the shortest fully evolved Pokémon, both being 8 inches tall.

    Origin[]

Polteageist is most likely based on a ghost inhabiting a teapot, while the ghost itself is based on black tea. More specifically, it may be inspired by the morinji-no-okama, a yōkai spirit from Japanese folklore that manifests as a possessed tea kettle. Another figure from Japanese folklore is may take inspiration from is the tsukumogami, objects in Japanese folklore that gain a spirit, with Polteageist being a teapot literally "filled" with spirit. It may also be based on the stereotypical action of ghosts lifting objects to make it seem as though they are floating. It may also be based on a poltergeist, a type of ghost that possesses objects.

    Etymology[]

Polteageist is a combination of "poltergeist" and "tea".

Its Japanese name, Pottodesu, comes from "pot" and "death". It is also a pun on potto desu (it is a teapot).
