Gastrodon (Japanese: トリトドン, Hepburn: Toritodon) (GAS-tro-donn[1]) is a Water/Ground-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.
Biology[]
Physiology[]
A moderate-sized giant slug found in the Sinnoh region. It shows allotropic specification (same species but different appearances). The West Sea form is brown & pink, with bumps and pink spots on its back. It has four tentacles on its head, resembling rhinophores and oral tentacles. The East Sea variant is green and turquoise. Its rhinophores are wavy and pointed back instead of upward, and it lacks oral tenatcles. It has turquoise spots on its back, as well as a yellow ridge that forms a fin. Both forms have three oval-shaped black eyes and a yellow stripe that forms the edge of the mantle skirt.
Gastrodon has high defense and useful regenerative abilities, but it is not valued for its speed (considering it is a slug).
Long ago, Gastrodon had a shell, but overtime it lost this trait. It now has a thin but solid vestigal plate in its back. It has no bones, but its soft body is surprisingly resistant to attacks. It can also regrow any portion of its body that is severed. Its main form of defense is a purple fluid it can secrete when pursued by predators. The fluid is incredibly sticky and causes Gastrodon to become bitter and inedible. This ability is reminiscent of the real-life sea hare's defense mechanism. It is a relative of Shellder and Cloyster.
Behavior[]
Gastrodon are aloof Pokémon. They do not react much to the presence of humans. They tend to flee when they sense danger. Their habitats are mostly beaches with shallow waters.
Despite their aloofness, Gastrodon are actually carnivores. They catch their prey, which they proceed to melt with their mucus prior to slurping them up.
Natural abilities[]
Like Shellos, Gastrodon ooze a slick purple fluid when hurt to make themselves slippery. This substance is also very bitter and renders their meat nearly inedible. They have superb regenerative skills and can grow back torn-off parts of their bodies. They are pliable because they lack skeletal systems, letting them into squeeze into tight spaces.
They can produce a type of special mucus, which is strong enough to melt their prey for easier consumption.
Evolution[]
Gastrodon evolves from Shellos starting at level 30.

East Sea: A team of researchers is scouring the oceans of the world in search of a Gastrodon in a color never seen before. - Moon
West Sea: Plankton, invisible to the naked eye, is its main food source. It comes onto the land periodically, but the reason for this is not known.
East Sea: Experiments are being conducted to discover what happens when a Gastrodon is raised in a location other than the sea where it was born. - Ultra Sun
West Sea: Long ago, it had a shell on its back. There’s now a vestigial plate on its back that’s hard but thin.
East Sea: When it’s attacked, it gushes a purple liquid that’s not poisonous but makes Gastrodon’s meat bitter and inedible. - Ultra Moon
West Sea: Their shape and color change, depending on their environment and diet. There are many of them at beaches where the waves are calm.
East Sea: A relative of Shellder and Cloyster, this ocean dweller sometimes comes onto land in search of food. - Sword
West Sea: Its search for food sometimes leads it onto land, where it leaves behind a sticky trail of slime as it passes through.
East Sea: It secretes a purple fluid to deter enemies. This fluid isn't poisonous. Instead, it's super sticky, and once it sticks, it's very hard to unstick. - Shield
West Sea: The softness of its body helps disperse the force of impacts, so although its body is uncommonly squishy, it's also surprisingly resilient.
East Sea: Its body is covered in a sticky slime. It's very susceptible to dehydration, so it can't spend too much time on land. - Brilliant Diamond
It has a pliable body without any bones. If any part of its body is torn off, it grows right back.
- Shining Pearl
It apparently had a huge shell for protection in ancient times. It lives in shallow tidal pools.
- Legends: Arceus
West Sea: Eats beach sand for nourishment. Should one Gastrodon encounter another of a different color, a fierce battle will inevitably ensue.
East Sea: Found more often on the land than in the sea. More active when it's cloudy or rainy out than when the weather is fair. - Scarlet
West Sea: Its whole body is sticky with mucus. In the past, this form of Gastrodon was by far the more numerous one.
East Sea: They normally inhabit rocky seashores, but in times of continuous rain, they can sometimes be found in the mountains, far from the sea. - Violet
West Sea: It appears on beaches where the waters are shallow. Once it catches prey, it will slowly melt them with its mucus before slurping them up.
East Sea: Fishers say that they didn't see many of these Pokémon in the past, but this form of Gastrodon is now increasing in number.

Trivia[]
- This Pokémon, along with Shellos, were rumored to be a pre-evolution of Lapras prior to Diamond and Pearl's release, but this rumor was later confirmed false.
Origin[]
Gastrodon is based on a sea slug, specifically the Loch's chromodoris sea slugs. Its body structure also resembles the structure of Opisthobranchs, a group of gastropods.
Etymology[]
Gastrodon is a portmanteau of "gastropod" and -don (Spanish for "lord"). It may also come from the phylum Gastropoda, which includes sea slugs.
Its Japanese name, Toritodon, comes from Triton (referring to a type of sea snail, Poseidon/Neptune's son in Greco-Roman mythology, and a moon of the planet Neptune which some have suggested may have oceans that may be home to aquatic alien life) and -don.
