Lotad (Japanese: ハスボー, Hepburn: Hasuboo) (LOW-tad) is a Water/Grass-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III. It is Seedot's counterpart.

Biology

Physiology

Lotad is both an aquatic and a land-dwelling Pokémon, found in the Hoenn region, with a lily pad on its back.

Behavior

This species lives in groups at ponds, with their bodies submerged while suspended at the surface by their buoyant leaves, as a measure of hiding from predators. When on dry land, Lotad scuttles towards other ponds because its leaf is too heavy to support, in contrast to Lotad's ancient ancestors which were one primarily land-dwelling Pokémon.Lotad will occasionally leave the water to search for new ponds if their original ones become polluted; they must drink clean water routinely to prevent their pads from wilting. Lotad camouflage themselves underwater, leaving only their leaves exposed to blend in with lily pads. These leaves are buoyant enough to suspend them perfectly in this fashion.Lotad are docile and easygoing Pokémon. They are known to carry smaller Pokémon that can’t swim over bodies of water, ferrying them over on their broad pads.

Evolution

Lotad evolves into Lombre starting at level 14. Lombre can then evolve into Ludicolo with the use of a Water Stone.

Brock's Lotad.

In the Pokémon anime, a Lotad becomes one of the Pokémon in Brock's possession in the third-generation Hoenn story arc in a development considered ironic because previously Brock primarily used Pokémon of the Rock and Ground types. His Lotad eventually evolved into Lombre, and then Ludicolo. Other than Brock's Lotad, many Lotads have been seen where Brock caught his.

In the XYZ series, many Lotad live in the wetlands area of Kalos, cared for by area warden Keegan and by Ash's Goodra.

Trivia

• No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Lombre's evolutionary line.
• Lombre's evolutionary line are the only Pokémon to be in both the Water 1 and Grass egg groups.
• Lombre's evolutionary line are the only Pokémon to have Rain Dish as a normal ability instead of a hidden ability.

Origin

Lotad may be based on a kappa, a yōkai from Japanese mythology known for the dish on its head, though in place of this, Lotad has a lily pad instead.

Etymology

Lotad may come from lotus and pad (referring to a lily pad). It may also come from "low tide".
