Skarmory (Japanese: エアームド, Hepburn: Eaamudo) (SKAR-more-ree) is a Steel/Flying-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

Biology

Skarmory resembles an ostrich clad in steel armor, with long, sharp-taloned legs and a head that looks like it is wearing a steel helmet covering its beak. It also has red feathers.

Behavior

Skarmory make their nests in bramble bushes. Though born with soft skin, they quickly callous and harden through the constant scratching of their prickly nests.Skarmory are highly aggressive and territorial, engaging in vicious battles over disputed land. They will rip off wings and feathers from foes with their sharp beaks or talons to send them plummeting to the ground. In Galar, they compete with Corviknight for territory. Skarmory are known to kidnap small, defenseless Pokémon from their trainers or parents in hopes of luring larger prey seeking to retrieve them back to their nests. They have even been observed tearing off the limbs of weaker creatures or chasing them off cliffs simply for fun. Because their water can rust their wings, Skarmory seek shelter in brambles during the rain.

Skarmory are used by the faculty and students in Blueberry Academy as Flying Taxis.

Natural abilities

Though not so aerodynamic and seemingly heavy in size, a Skarmory can still fly. Its armor can regenerate annually to restore the cutting edges after taking a lot of hits in battle, but can rust. It can use the feathers as blades to cut foes.

Habitat

It is said to live in thorn bushes, where its feathers are ground into the hardness of iron.

Evolution

Skarmory does not evolve.

Mystery Dungeon series

Skarmory appears as a the first boss in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team & Blue Rescue Team, blaming Diglett and his family because of the recurring earthquakes. He then kidnapped Diglett and brought him to Mt. Steel. If you win, after the battle Skarmory will Fly away and you won't be able to find that Skarmory again.

Trivia

• Up until the introduction of Celesteela, no other Pokémon had the same type combination as Skarmory.
• Skarmory has the highest Defense of all Flying-type Pokémon.
• According to game sprites, Skarmory has had a lot of design changes. In Gold and Silver, it had a full gray body until Crystal, where it had purple-gray armor and dark red feathers with two tails. From Pokémon Ruby to Pokémon LeafGreen, it had plain gray armor and red feathers. From Pokémon Diamond to today, it has light gray armor with scarlet feathers.
• In Generation II, Skarmory was a counterpart to Mantine. Both were dual-type Pokémon with the Flying type as their secondary type. Both are also version exclusives in Gold & Silver and have the same capture rate and BST. Mantine has a learnset of mostly special moves and Skarmory has a learnset of mostly physical moves. Ever since the introduction of Mantyke, the main similarities were broken.
• Skarmory is one of the collectable spirits in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
• Its Johto Pokédex number is identical to its number in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 (203).
• Both its feathers and Kommo-o's scales were used as ancient Alola armor.

Origin

Skarmory seems to be based on a pterodactyl or a condor. It also seems to be based on a Alicanto (an ancient bird made of hard metals and rocks like gold) or a Stymphalian Bird (a bird of Greek mythology that had steel-like talons).

Its concept is a nod to the fact that crane and sword in Japanese have very similar pronunciation.

Etymology

Skarmory is a mix of "sky", "scar" and "armory".

Eaamudo is a mix of "air" and "armored". It's also a pun of "armed".
