Forretress (Japanese: フォレトス, Hepburn: Foretosu) (FOR-it-TRESS) is a Bug/Steel-type Pokémon that was introduced in Generation II.

Biology

Physiology

Forretress is a large, spherical Pokémon with no visible limbs. The upper and lower halves of its body are capped by bumpy steel plates. The outer plates have zigzagging ridges that open along its back and front, revealing its smooth, red inner shell. The inner shell is punctuated by four cylindrical spikes, each tapering to an open point. Between the spikes, the inner shell opens along a straight line to reveal Forretress' eyes, which are round with large pupils.

Behavior

Forretress have shells that are steel-hard. Like Pineco, they are largely sessile, living out their lives almost entirely in a single tree. However, while Pineco prefer to live in branches, Forretress makes their homes in the nooks and crannies of tree trunks. They are insectivores, catching bugs that are attracted to the scent of Pineco resin around them. Forretress can no longer produce this resin themselves, however, so they are always found within trees of Pineco colonies. Researchers are baffled by the contents of their shells. Forretress carapaces are impenetrable even by the marvels of modern science. They only crack open just barely wide enough to catch prey, and do it so quickly that the motion is practically invisible to the naked eye. Though Forretress can still explode like Pineco, they prefer to defend themselves with Spikes. Their shells naturally chip from outside weather conditions—by periodically spinning rapidly, they can dislodge sharp, broken pieces of their shells onto the ground below to deter predators from approaching. This maneuver is in fact a defensive reflex that triggers instinctually whenever Forretress are startled.

Trivia

• Strangely, in Gold and Silver, Forretress is shown with a gray shell. In Crystal, it was then changed to a light purple shell. This lasted until X and Y where its shell changed back into its gray color.

Origin

Foretress is based on a bagworm and a tank or military fortress. Its shell also resembles that of a tree nut, which are sometimes inhabited by bagworms.

Etymology

Foretress come from forest, fortress, turret (something that shoots) and ferrous (Latin for iron).
