Staryu (Japanese: ヒトデマン, Hepburn: Hitodeman) (STAR-you) is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves into Starmie by being exposed to a Water Stone.

Biology

Physiology

Staryu is a star shaped Pokémon. Its "arms" are brown. It seems to have some kind of crystal or gem for a core. The core is surrounded by a yellow or gold "barrier."

Behavior

Staryu are mysterious Pokémon that lie on the seabed during the day and float up to the surface at night. For this reason, Pokémon like Lumineon often nibble on them as a reliable source of food.

Even a Staryu cut into pieces can regenerate as long as its core is intact. Their centers are vital to their survival and are irreplaceable. These cores glow brightly at night when Staryu are active, whereas the cores of sick Staryu glow faintly and flicker.

Staryu mostly live by the seashore in large numbers. Groups of Staryu, referred to as "constellations", rise to the surface each night, cores aglow. They seem to float aimlessly (though they are actually filter-feeding), gazing at the stars. Their cores mysteriously pulse at the same rate as a human's resting heartbeat. From above, oceans with large numbers of Staryu seem to mimic and align with the twinkling skies above. However, Staryu only become active if the stars are visible; if clouds obscure the night sky, they will stay on the seafloor and their cores will not light up.

Natural Abilities

Staryu have the unique ability to regenerate their bodies if they are torn apart. As long as the core remains, they can regenerate. At the night, the red stone at the center of Staryu twinkle up like stars in the sky.

• Staryu shares the same species with Cleffa, as they're both known as the Star Shape Pokémon.
• In Super Smash Bros., Staryu is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Poké Balls. During this time, it uses the move Swift.
• In Pokémon Gold and Silver, Staryu and Starmie were programmed to learn Egg moves. However, their genderless status means that they are only able to breed with Ditto, rendering these moves unobtainable during a normal playthrough. This was fixed in Pokémon Crystal Version.
• Staryu is often seen as Shellder's counterpart, as they have the same egg group and evolution method, as well as gaining a second type upon evolution. They are also version exclusive in Firered and Leafgreen as well as X and Y. Finally, they can hold rare items when caught.
• Staryu is the only Pokémon in Pokémon Ranger (game) to have access to Flash, but will be freed the minute after the move is executed and cannot be captured again until the Kyogre Mission.
• Staryu's Ultraman origins have led the Pokémon YouTuber Lockstin to believe that the Pokémon franchise as a whole is based on the season of Ultraman where the titular character captured Kaiju for use in battle, as well as why so many early Pokémon(Golem,Nidoking etc.)look like Ultraman antagonists, as well as Dynamax being a nod to how Ultraman can grow in size to fight against enemies.

Origin

Staryu's design seems to be based on a Starfish. It may also be based on actual stars due to its supposed relations with space.

Staryu's concept, design, and voice effects in the anime are presumably references to the Ultraman series. Additionally, Staryu's prototype within the Capsule Monsters was called Mīmī (ミミー) where the spaceship of Alien Mimy from Ultraseven and Pairan from Warning from Space possess notable similarities in etymology and design with Staryu.

Etymology

Staryu's name is derived from the words star and yu, which may be a misspelling of the word "you". It may also derive from 魚 / 鱼 yú (Chinese for 'fish').
