Politoed (Japanese: ニョロトノ, Hepburn: Nyorotono) (PAUL-lee-TOED) is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

Biology

Physiology

Politoed is a green, bipedal, frog-like Pokémon with yellow hands, belly, throat, and toes. It has a long, curled hair on top of its head and pink cheek spots that are smaller on the female than on the male. There is a green swirl on its belly. Its legs are well developed and it has bulbous toes and fingers.

Gender differences

Male Politoed have larger cheeks than the females.

Behavior

Politoed are jovial Pokémon, often seen clapping and hopping around ponds. They congregate in triplets or quartets (colloquially known as “choruses”) and sing together; their harsh croaking sounds like rumbling bellows or even screaming when they do so. Despite this, there is a famous Johtonian composer who wrote a haunting ballad based on the sounds of a Politoed chorus.

Lone Politoed are often the heads of local communities of Poliwag and Poliwhirl, commanding them sternly with their croaks. Male Politoed croak louder than females, and deeper, more resonant male croaking. The curls on their heads are symbols of dominance. When their positions are challenged by intruding or recently evolved Politoed, the ones with larger curls ultimately become the leaders. Politoed with short curls or curls lost in battle have been observed to command little to no respect from their peers; their bellows will simply be ignored. Politoed are equally adept in the water as they are on land. Because of their porous skin, they must return into the water at least once every 24 hours in order to rehydrate themselves. When choruses of least four Politoed are observed singing together, it is said that rainstorms are imminent. Their cheeks will also inflate slightly before drizzles.

Abilities

Much like its pre-evolutions and alternate evolution, it has access to Damp (which prevents self-destructive attacks from being used) and Water Absorb (which heals up when it is hit by a water move). Its hidden ability is Drizzle, which is formerly synonymous with Kyogre, giving it the ability to set up rain upon switching in.

Politoed serve as the leader of its pre-evolutions and can gather them from far and wide by using its cry. It is a very good singer and does so by expanding its throat.

Evolution

Politoed is the evolved form of Poliwhirl by trading Poliwhirl while holding King's Rock.

Anime

Misty owns a Politoed after evolving from a Poliwhirl who wears the King's Rock owned by Ash. Politoed appears as a happy-go-lucky Pokémon and it was later shared by Brock's Ludicolo. In the XY series, it was later followed by Tierno's Politoed whose personality has a combination between both Misty's and Brock's Ludicolo due to Tierno rhythmic dance training and its battles.

Trivia

• Politoed's shiny in Generation II was a dark green color with the yellow being replaced with lavender. Today, it has blue skin and the yellow is replaced with pink.
• Politoed is one of the 11 Generation II Pokémon that is an evolution of a Generation I Pokémon.
• Apparently,if 3 or more Politoed gather, they sing in a chorus.
• Politoed's curly hair is supposedly its status as king, and also indicates how obedient it's pre-evolutions are to it and how much it is respected by others.
• Politoed has the least amount of learnable moves out off all the trade evolutions.

Origin

Politoed may be based on a Tree Frog and the Glass Frog considering how it's pre evolutions have a visible stomach swirl. Its Japanese name implies it may be based on the Dark Spotted Frog.

Etymology

Politoed's name is a combination of pollywog, toad (although it is a frog) and poly-toed (which is a joke to the fact that it grew many toes after it evolved from Poliwhirl).

Name in other languages

Japanese: Nyorotono may be a combination of nyoronyoro (onomatopoeia for slithering) and tono (lord, hence its evolution method and behavior). It may be a pun on the dark spotted frog, whose Japanese name means 'lord frog'.
