Biology
Physiology
Arceus as all of its different forms
Arceus is an equine being similar to a Qilin. Its body color is white with a gray, vertically striated underside, the pattern of which has similar recurrences on the underside of Arceus's mane, tail, and face, and Arceus's pointed feet are tipped with gold hooves. Its mane is quite long, jutting away from its head, and its face is gray, with green eyes and red pupils, and a green circular pattern below its eyes.
Arceus also has a streak of gold coloration on its head, and ears that point upward. Its neck is fairly long, with two pairs of extrusions to the sides, and a flap-like feature on the neck's underside that is colored white like much of the body. It also has a golden cross-like wheel attached to its body by its round abdomen, which changes color along with its eyes and hooves based on Arceus's current type. The wheel also has four jewels attached to it. The pattern of striated gray of Arceus's underbelly resumes past Arceus's waist, the underside of Arceus's limbs also being gray in coloration, and with extrusions at the tops of the legs. Arceus's tail is fairly like its mane in shape and coloration.
Arceus looks like a fusion of Palkia and Dialga, resembling a wingless dragon of some sort. It's appearance also bears some resemblance to a llama. Arceus will change color as well as type with whatever type of plate it is holding. It is shown with other colors of the wheel, though always being different.
According to Arceus itself in Legends: Arceus, it doesn't have a tangible nor concrete appearance. Its known equine appearance is merely a fragment of itself as a proxy in the living world.
Natural abilities
Arceus has the ability Multitype, which is an ability exclusive only to this Pokémon. Multitype allows Arceus to change its type based on whichever plate or type-specific Z-Crystal it is currently holding. For example, holding the Flame Plate makes it the Fire type, while holding a Waterium Z will make it a Water type. Generation VI introduced Fairy type, so Arceus can be a Fairy Type upon having Pixie Plate or Fairium Z.
According to the Pokédex, Arceus in mythology is said to have shaped the Universe with its "1,000" arms, though, due to Arceus not actually having any arms, it can safely be assumed that the "1,000 arms" are metaphorical. The "1,000" arms could be Arceus' move "Judgement" but this is still unknown.
It has also been stated that Arceus created the Creation Trio (otherwise known as the Dragon Trio) Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina, as well as the Lake Guardian Trio (also known as the Lake Spirits) Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf. Arceus can also easily hold off Giratina, Palkia, and Dialga all at the same time, making it incredibly powerful and it can speak using telepathy the same way Mewtwo speaks.
In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Arceus demonstrated the ability to open time-space rifts which it can use to summon humans from different points in time, Arceus also turned the player's smartphone into an Arc Phone so it could communicate with the player and send them instructions via messages. After the player's battle with Arceus, Arceus described the physical Pokémon encountered by the player as "a portion of [itself]", heavily implying that it is not Arceus' true form but rather an extension of itself.
Its balanced stats surpass Mew's, Celebi's, Jirachi's, Manaphy's, and Victini's. It is also capable of learning Draco Meteor if given the Draco Plate. It can learn nearly every move, excluding ones that require the use of arms or hands. The exception to this is Seismic Toss, although it can be presumed that it can lift its foes with telekinesis. It can be said that Arceus is arguably the most powerful Pokémon considering it's the creator of all Pokémon, has the second highest base stats of any Pokémon (only behind Ultra Necrozma), and its ability to overpower three extremely powerful legendary Pokémon (Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina).
Evolution
Arceus does not evolve.

Appearances
Core series
In Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version and Pokémon Platinum Version, Arceus appears in the Hall of Origin, where it can be encountered only by using the Azure Flute, obtained only from special events. Arceus was not officially revealed until February 2009. Arceus could be obtained during a few special events taking place in 2009 and 2010. Every special event distributed a level 100 Arceus that corresponds to Arceus and the Jewel of Life, including one at Toys "R" Us stores in the United States between November 7-15, 2009. The Azure Flute was never distributed officially, presumably in favor of the Arceus used to promote the film.
In Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version, if the player has an Arceus, they can enter the Sinjoh Ruins, where the Arceus creates a newborn Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina, each at level one and holding their respective orbs. The event can be activated once with the film Arceus and with an Arceus obtained in the Hall of Origin unofficially.
Spinoffs
Arceus is seemingly referenced in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness. On the final floor at the last dungeon, your hero will find a Silver Arceus Statue, which gives a very powerful item called a Space Globe, which raises all the active Team Member's Attack stat. Arceus itself does not appear in the game. However, Arceus has a very small role at the end of the final episode. After beating Primal Dialga and Dusknoir, Grovyle and Celebi are about to be erased from the timeline, although this is canceled suddenly, along with the erasure of Dusknoir. Dialga says it is not his doing, but another Pokémon's at a much higher power level, possibly referring to Arceus.
Anime
Arceus appeared in Arceus and the Jewel of Life, making its debut appearance in any form of the Pokémon Anime. Arceus was betrayed by Damos (but, revealed brainwashed by Marcus) then become upset. After he was returned, he battled against Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina. Dialga transported Ash Ketchum, Dawn,Brock, and Sheena back in time to stop Marcus from betraying Arceus in the first place.
Arceus also appears with other Legendary Pokémon in Hoopa and the Clash of Ages the 18th Pokémon movie. It was seen flying through the sky at the end of the movie.
Arceus made its debut appearance as a silhouette in Showdown at the Gates of Warp!, it was called upon by Ash, Goh, Dawn, Chloe and everyone in both worlds to break the Red Chain to free Dialga and Palkia and end the fight.
It reappears again in The Arceus Chronicles, it sensed the Sinnoh region is in danger again, when Team Galactic stole the Flame Plate and capture Heatran to open the dimensional gate to bring Cyrus back. It summons the Lake Guardians to help out Ash and the others to stop them and the Monster Heatran from reaching Spear Pillar at Mt. Coronet. It shows up and assist them to take down Team Galactic first, then closes the gate to prevent Cyrus from coming back, it then transformed into its Water-type form to trap the Monster Heatran so Ash, Goh, Dawn and their Pokémon can rescue Heatran before it explodes. After Heatran, Mt Coronet and Sinnoh are saved, Arceus along with Azelf, Mesprit and Uxie return to their dimensional home peacefully.
Arceus also appeared along with Dialga, Palkia and Giratina in the opening "The Greatest - Everyday!".
Manga
Gold will fight against Arceus in the later chapters of HeartGold and SoulSilver Pokémon Adventures.
Trivia
- Arceus is the only Pokémon to be the trio master of two Legendary Trios, and the only trio master to be a Mythical Pokémon.
- The signature Ability of Silvally, RKS System, is a reference to Arceus (as holding Memories changes the types of Silvally and its signature move, just as Plates do for Arceus). This is likely due to Silvally having been an artificial attempt to recreate Arceus.
- Arceus, not being available in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, is referenced by a company available in Poké Jobs, RKS Laboratories, in its naming scheme similar to RKS System and the ring in their company logo. The company's Japanese name (アルセウス製薬) even directly mentions Arceus' name (アルセウス).
- Arceus's name pronunciation in Pokémon Battle Revolution is AR-SEE-us, the same as the Japanese pronunciation, compared to the later English pronunciation of AR-KEY-us, which has been stated to be due to avoiding issues in European countries where it may look like it is derived from the British expletive "arse".
- It was once impossible to legitimately own an Arceus below Level 100 because the Azure Flute was never officially distributed and Arceus has never been distributed at any other level. However, in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, you can unlock the Hall of Origin by having a complete save of Legends Arceus, which allows you to catch a Level 80 Arceus like the original event.
- In the anime Arceus possesses all 16 plates at once and can change its type at will (in the games it can only hold one at a time).
- The Greek word 'archaios' means ancient. It then became the English word "archaic", which probably refers to how Arceus created the world and could be the first-ever Pokémon.
- Arceus is considered to be somewhat of a god or creator of Pokémon universe based on Sinnoh myth and the very first Pokémon in existence.
- Arceus placed second in a special poll created to see which Pokémon was the most popular to be distributed for the upcoming movie Volcanion and the Ingenious Magearna.
- In Super Smash Bros., Arceus is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Poké Balls. During this time, it uses the move Gravity.
- Arceus is the first Mythical Pokémon to be a game mascot in a main series game.
- Arceus has the second highest base stat total of any Pokémon, with the only one exception being Ultra Necrozma, having 754 in comparison to Arceus' 720.
- Arceus is one of only a few Pokémon that have perfectly equal base stats. Other notable instances include Celebi, Jirachi, Manaphy, Mew, Phione, and Victini.
Origin
Arceus is based on a Creator deity, the idea of which is present in many world mythologies and religions. It also resembles a Qilin. The idea of being the first-ever Pokémon may reference how many religions often believe that certain creator gods were the first in the universe and that they created everything. The fact that it hatches from an egg may reference the World egg. Its description in the Pokédex and its design may reference both forms of Avalokiteśvara, often described as having eleven heads and a thousand hands (relating to its Pokédex entry) or having one head and four arms with a shining white coloring (relating to its Normal Form). Its design may also be based off on an alpaca or llama, religious depictions of lambs, and the Urcuchillay, an Incan deity said to take the form of a multi-colored llama. Its pose in its official artwork as well as its legs resembling fingers may play off of the Hand of God, a common motif in religious, particularly Christian and Jewish, art.
Etymology
Arceus comes from "archetypus" (Latin for "Archetype"), αρχή (arché, Greek for "the Beginning"), aureus ("Golden") or "arch-"(original, supreme or high-ranked), as well as possibly incorporating "arcanus" (Latin for "[Holy] Secret"), "Arael" (an Abrahamic angel whose name translates to "light of God"), "arcane", "arc" (referring to the wheel around its body) or "alpha" (The first letter of the Greek alphabet and often symbolic of beginnings. Alpha comes from the term Alpha and Omega, which refers to God in the Book of Revelation.) and "deus" meaning divine being or god. It may also incorporate "Zeus" (the king of the gods in Greek mythology), "Ra" (the Egyptian god of the sun), "Uranus" (the primordial Greco-Roman god of the sky), and/or "Jesus" (an important figure in the Abrahamic religions, especially Christianity, in which he is believed to be the son of God).
Arceus's "Ar" (アル, aru) part may be a reference to Alpaca (アルパカ arupaka) which is a popular animal in Japan.
