Golem (Japanese: ゴローニャ, HepburnGoroonya) (GO-lum[1]) is a Rock/Ground-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I, and a Rock/Electric-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VII.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Kantonian[]

Golem's body resembles a large boulder. It has claws on its hands and feet.

Alolan Golem concept art

Concept artwork of Alolan Golem.

Alolan[]

An Alolan Golem is much different than its Kantonian counterpart. Two crystalline formations protrude from Golem's back while what appear to be a mustache and beard are actually iron filings. Golem's arms are much shorter as well.

Behavior[]

Kantonian[]

Golem shed their skins annually to grow larger; their shells almost immediately crumble away into the soil, enriching it. Farmers strive to collect shed Golem pelts as a result. Their bodies are whitish and tender for a short period of time, but new shells will quickly harden upon contact with the air. However, Golem eventually stop shedding with age, and particularly old individuals may even start growing moss on their carapaces after some time. Earthquakes will sometimes send groups of Golem rolling down, endangering alpine homes. To protect these structures, grooves are often dug in the sides of mountains to redirect the paths of spooked Golem (and careless Graveler as well).

Alolan[]

Though they do not have very good aim, their projectiles can easily electrify foes if they even so much as graze them, causing numbness or even fainting; such projectiles will release a burst of electrical energy radiating form the point of impact. They may even grab Alolan Geodude as ammo if they are not paying attention. Though firing their pre-evolutions does not hurt them, their relatives are usually not at all happy about the arrangement. These Pokémon must find rocks to reload between each shot, making their attacks rather slow. If their opponents draw too near while they are reloading, they may try to electrocute them directly with their cannons. These irritable Pokémon can emit crackling electricity from the surface of their bodies when angered to 'growl' with the sound of an approaching thunderstorm.

Natural abilities[]

Golem can have the ability Rock Head or the ability Sturdy. Rock Head prevents Golem from recoiling. Sturdy prevents Golem from being KO-ed by 1 Hit KO moves; starting with Gen V, Sturdy allows Golem to hang on with 1 HP after being hit by a single attack. Golem's Alolan variant gains two new abilities, which are Magnet Pull and Galvanize. Magnet Pull, which is shared with the Magnemite line and Nosepass line, prevent Steel-type Pokémon from escaping. Galvanize, which is unique among the Alolan Graveler evolution line, converts Normal-type moves into Electric-type moves.

Golem's hide is so hard, that dynamite can't harm it. When they roll down the mountains they live on, they leave grooves.

The Alolan variant of Golem generates magnetic energy to increase the speed of the electrically charged boulders it launches from the crystals on its back; these boulders can paralyze and numb opponents at the slightest touch. However, if these boulders aren't available for use, Alolan Golem will use nearby Alolan Geodudes as spare ammunition. Unlike its Kantonian counterpart, Alolan Golem is much more stubborn and can discharge electricity when agitated as well as letting out a roar that mimics the sound of Thunder.

Evolution[]

Graveler evolves into Golem when traded. It is the final form of Geodude.

  • Omega Ruby

Golem live up on mountains. If there is a large earthquake, these Pokémon will come rolling down off the mountains en masse to the foothills below.

  • Alpha Sapphire

Golem is known for rolling down from mountains. To prevent them from rolling into the homes of people downhill, grooves have been dug into the sides of mountains to serve as guideways for diverting this Pokémon's course.

  • Sun

Kantonian Form: Its body can survive dynamite blasts without a single scratch, but it hates rain and humidity.
Alolan Form: It fires rocks charged with electricity. Even if the rock isn't fired that accurately, just grazing an opponent will cause numbness and fainting.

  • Moon

Kantonian Form: Once a year, this Pokémon molts, and its shed shell returns to the soil. This process creates enriched soil, so farmers collect the shells.
Alolan Form: Because it can't fire boulders at a rapid pace, it's been known to seize nearby Geodude and fire them from its back.

  • Ultra Sun

Kantonian Form: When Golem grow old, they stop shedding their shells. Those that have lived a long, long time have shells green with moss.
Alolan Form: It’s grumpy and stubborn. If you upset it, it discharges electricity from the surface of its body and growls with a voice like thunder.

  • Ultra Moon

Kantonian Form: It detonates its own body. The power from that explosion can propel it up steep mountain paths with amazing speed.
Alolan Form: It shoots large rocks that are charged with electricity. Tremendous electric shocks are flung out across the whole area of impact.

  • Let's Go, Pikachu!

Kantonian Form: Once it sheds its skin, its body turns tender and whitish. Its hide hardens when it's exposed to air.
Alolan Form: It uses magnetism to accelerate and fire off rocks tinged with electricity. Even if it doesn't score a direct hit, the jolt of electricity will do the job.

  • Let's Go, Eevee!

  • Brilliant Diamond

It sheds its hide once a year. Its boulder-like body is so tough, even dynamite can't harm it.

  • Shining Pearl

It tumbles down mountains, leaving grooves from peak to base. Stay clear of these grooves.

  • Legends: Arceus

The rocklike shell is shed each year. The cast-off shell then crumbles, reverting to a mass of soil, which can be spread across fields to promote crop growth.

  • Scarlet

It is enclosed in a hard shell that is as rugged as slabs of rock. It sheds skin once a year to grow larger.

  • Violet

It deliberately blows itself up, then uses this explosive force to jump from mountain to mountain.

    Trivia[]

    • Alolan Golem and its pre-evolutionary forms are the only Rock/electric-type Pokémon.

    Origin[]

Golem appears to be based on a rock or boulder with elements of a tortoise, animals believed to carry the world on their backs in some mythologies. As evidenced by its English name, it also takes inspiration from a golem, with its appearance being based around more media-portrayed appearances, usually appearing as a monster covered in or made out of stone. It may also be based on a yōkai known as the Tsuchikorobi, also called the "tumbling monster" that rolls down cliffs and squashes travelers in its way similarly to a boulder. Its body also appears similarly to tectonic plates.

Golem's Alolan form appears to be a pun on a thunderegg, a crystalline rock similar to a geode that forms with volcanic ash layers. Its "hair" also appears to be based on magnetic sand. It might also share some characteristics with a railgun due to the two crystal-like structures protruding from the top of its body and it using it to launch Geodude.

    Etymology[]

Golem is literally golem, however, it may come from gorogorōn (the Japanese onomatopoeia of something rolling).
