Stantler (Japanese: オドシシ, HepburnOdoshishi) (STAN-tler[1]) is a Normal-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II. In Generation VIII, it evolves into Wyrdeer in the Hisui region.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Stantler is brown in color with gold antlers on its head. It most closely resembles a reindeer or a moose. The regal-looking antlers on its head will cause hallucinations if you stare at them for too long. It has a large, rounded tail which curls tightly around its rump.

Behavior[]

They live together in herds and dwell in forests. As shown in the anime, a baby Stantler that is separated from its herd and frightened will instinctively produce an illusion of a big, stampeding herd to scare away perceived threats. It can be presumed that Stantler shed their horns at some point.

Spooked Stantler herds will actually stampede, and it does not take much to scare these restless creatures. These Pokémon herd by nature, so it can be difficult to raise a single one. Young Stantler are particularly skittish if separated from their herds, while older ones are less easily scared. They will become more docile and calm once they get used to their surroundings.

Stantler herds graze on grasses and shrubs, traveling from one area to the next as they search for food. In more barren areas, such as mountains, they may also scrape off mosses and lichens from rocks for sustenance.

Natural abilities[]

Stantler can create mirages and fabricated spaces via their curved horns by twisting the surrounding air. Their psychic powers used to be much stronger in the past when they lived in harsher environments.

Evolution[]

In the Hisui region, it evolves into Wyrdeer by using Psyshield Bash 20 times in Agile Style.

Manga[]

Trivia[]

  • Stantler, along with Umbreon, cannot learn Special moves while leveling up.
  • On Route 36, right before Violet City, Stantler can be found there. This might reference how Violet City is based on Nara, Japan, a place that wild deer are free to roam.
  • According to longtime Pokémon localization translator Nob Ogasawara, he originally wanted Stantler to be named as "Scaribou" (a combination of "scary" and "caribou") in English because it would bear a closer resemblance to its Japanese name, but Nintendo rejected the idea.

Origin[]

Stantler appears to be based on an elk, a deer or a reindeer. As evidence by its Japanese name, it may be based on a shishiodoshi, a device used to scare away animals, including deer, from gardens.

Etymology[]

Stantler may come from stag and antler.

Its Japanese name, Odoshishi, is a corruption of shishiodoshi.
