Shuckle (Japanese: ツボツボ, HepburnTsubotsubo) (SHUCK-kull[1]) is a Bug/Rock-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II. It is known for having the highest base Defense and Special Defense stats of any non-legendary Pokémon.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Shuckle appears to be a small yellow turtle inside a red shell with many holes in it, fitting all four of its legs out. Some beige-like color surrounds the holes in Shuckle's body.

Its shiny form stays the same, albeit with a blue shell.

Behavior[]

Shuckle live among rocks within cracks and crevices. They secrete a corrosive fluid from their feet that can dissolve holes into boulders, tucking themselves in and withdrawing their limbs for safety in their makeshift shelters. To avoid damage, Shuckle tuck themselves into their shells and remain perfectly still. They subsist on diets of only Berries. When they find Berries, they store some within their shells. They then begin to decompose, ferment, and mix with their own bodily fluids to become a pulpy liquid. Depending on the type of Berries stored, the resulting juice can have a variety of interesting effects. One of the most common is known simply as Berry Juice, replenishing the health of Pokémon who drink it.

Natural abilities[]

Shuckle has the abilities Sturdy and Gluttony along with the hidden ability Contrary. Sturdy protects Shuckle from one-hit KOs whilst Gluttony increases the healing restoration of Shuckle when it eats a berry. Finally, Contrary makes stat changes have opposite effects.

Trivia[]

  • Shuckle's base Defense is equal to that of both Mega Aggron and Mega Steelix but it has the highest Special Defense at 230.
  • Shuckle couldn't use any Bug-type moves in Pokémon Platinum despite Bug being its primary type.
  • Shuckle is the only Pokémon with a function that is not an ability (changing of Oran Berry to Berry Juice then finally into a Rare Candy.)
  • It is possible for Shuckle to have the highest attack of all the Pokémon using the move Power Trick which switches a Pokémon's Attack and Defense. The drawback on those tactics is its pretty low ATK value, peaking at 130, meaning that he can become pretty defenseless once he inverts ATK and DEF values.
  • Despite Pokédex Entries saying that Shuckle has weak muscles, Shuckle is able to learn Rock Smash and Strength possibly because of its hard defense shell.
  • Shuckle is the only dual-type Pokémon that can naturally have the ability Gluttony.
  • Shuckle's Generation II shiny sprite has a purple shell as opposed to a blue one seen in later generations.
  • One of Clemont's contraptions resemble Shuckle. However, it is solid white.
  • Shuckle is the last Pokémon in National Pokédex order to have a non-HP base stat that is greater than its National Pokédex number. Shuckle actually has two, those being its equal base 230 Defense and Special Defense stats.
  • Shuckle is tied with Munchlax and Pyukumuku for the lowest base speed at 5.

Origins[]

Shuckle is based on an endolith, a type of fungus that lives in rocks or animal shells. This is shown in its species as the Mold Pokémon. It may also be based on shelled animals such as turtles, tortoises, and more clearly, barnacles. It also shares similarities with mollusks such as donning a shell, moving around slowly, and having a soft internal body.

Its ability to produce Berry Juice from Berries may reference honeydew, a secretion created by some insects that attracts other insects and is considered sweet (which may explain its Bug-typing). This may also play off the endolith fungus aspect, as mold can grow on food such as Berries and dissolve them. It storing these Berries in its shell and turning them into juice may also make Shuckle based on a jar, more specifically a jam jar. This is also proven by its coloration in which normal Shuckle is red and its Shiny coloration is blue (resembling strawberry and blueberry jam respectively). It may get its Rock-typing from how some foods are prepared in some cultures, usually by grinding them with stones or possibly referencing the jar-aspect and how pottery is often used to store such substances.

Etymology[]

Shuckle appears to be derived from shuck, barnacle or the word turtle.

Its Japanese name, Tsubotsubo, comes from the word tsubo (jar) twice. This references how Shuckle is able to store berries in its shell and make Berry Juice out of it. It could also come from fujitsubo (barnacle).
