Quick Answers

What is the evolution chain of Blastoise? toggle section
Blastoise's evolution chain starts with Squirtle, given to trainers by Professor Oak in Pokémon Red and Blue. Squirtle evolves into Wartortle, which then evolves into Blastoise, enhancing its water abilities at each stage. As a Water-type Pokémon, Blastoise is recognized for the powerful water jets it emits from its back cannons. It can evolve further into Mega Blastoise with the use of Blastoisinite.

Pokémon Blue Artwork

Blastoise's Red & Blue Artwork

Blastoise are large, tortoise-like Pokémon with some features similar to those of its pre-evolved forms. Blastoise has a large blue body, cream-colored stomach, small fat arms and legs, and a large brown shell rimmed with white, featuring its water cannons. It is now noticeably bulkier than its previous evolutions. Like its pre-evolved forms, Blastoise has a shell which covers its entire body, which it can also be withdrawn into. Contrary to Squirtle and Wartortle, Blastoise has large, water cannons that are located on the top left and right sides. The water that comes out of the cannons is capable of punching holes through thick steel.

Behavior[]

Blastoise can take the role of a leader in large groups of Squirtle and Wartortle. Its preferred habitat seems to be freshwater ponds and lakes. Blastoise are watchful Pokémon. They dislike humans in their territory, but will not attack unless provoked. They tend to fight when they sense danger.

Natural abilities[]

Blastoise, like Wartortle and Squirtle, can naturally shoot water, though not from its mouth, but from its large cannons. These cannons allow water to be shot at much greater force, which leaves them the backing force of all water attacks. From the spouts on its shell, Blastoise can fire water bullets with amazing accuracy, able to hit a target more than one hundred and sixty feet away.

Blastoise's shell has grown to match its body, and it boasts new extra-large water cannons as well. Dynamax Blastoise can adapt to different situations by using different combinations of its 31 variously sized cannons. In battle, it doesn't bother to aim. Instead, it fires dynamic, powerful torrents from multiple cannons to overwhelm opponents.

The main cannon on the center of Blastoise's shell is staggeringly powerful. Legend says this cannon has blasted holes into mountains. Dynamax Blastoise can also move the 12 large cannons surrounding its central cannon independently, letting it orient its attacks in any direction, whether toward the ground or the sky.

Evolution[]

Blastoise evolves from Wartortle starting at level 36 and is the final evolution of Squirtle. Blastoise can Mega Evolve into Mega Blastoise using its Blastoisinite, and can also Gigantamax into Gigantamax Blastoise.

Game info[]

Blastoise first appeared in the Generation I games as the final evolved form of Squirtle. Blastoise is not obtainable in the wild and thus can only be obtained by trading in games where they are not received through events. A Blastoise is owned by Red in Pokémon Gold and Silver, as well as in their remakes. In the remakes, it is level 84, making it the strongest Blastoise to be owned by a foe. Its moveset with Red is Blizzard, Focus Blast, Flash Cannon, and Hydro Cannon.

Trivia[]

  • Blastoise bears a striking resemblancse to Turtle Bazooka from the Kamen Rider franchise, and Gamera.[2] Satoshi Tajiri confirmed that classic tokusatsu productions largely inspired the Pokémon franchise. Additionally, the depictions of Hydro Pump by Ash's Squirtle, which was later reused for Blastoise in Pokémon UNITE[2] and Pokkén Tournament DX, and Blastoise's moving motions in New Pokémon Snap[3] and Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet[4] are also presumable references to Gamera.
  • Blastoise served as the version mascot for Generation 1's Pokémon Blue for Pokémon's release in countries outside of Japan, as Pokémon Green (which featured Venusaur as the mascot) was a Japanese exclusive. Their counterpart, Pokémon Red (which featured Charizard as the mascot), was released worldwide.
  • Blastoise is the only singular type final evolution Starter Pokémon in Generation I.
  • Blastoise shares the same species with Kabuto and Kabutops, being a Shellfish Pokémon.
  • In Generation II, Blastoise's shiny had gray skin with a lime-colored shell. In Generation III, its shiny had more of a light blue-purple color with a darker shell. It finally became its official shiny in Generation IV, where it had a dark green shell and light purple skin.
  • There is a recurring error where Blastoise can be seen with teeth (Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire sprites) and sometimes without them (X and Y sprites).
  • In Super Smash Bros., Blastoise is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Poké Balls. During this time, it uses the move Hydro Pump.
  • Blastoise's Pokkén DX model reveals that the inside of its cannons have rifling (spiral grooves that stabilize projectiles by causing them to spin).
  • The final-stage evolved forms of the Kanto first partner Pokémon (Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise) and Gengar are the only Pokémon who can both Mega Evolve and Gigantamax.

Origin[]

Blastoise's design seems to be based on a tortoise and tank. Within East Asian mythology, the Black Turtle of the North, Genbu or Xuanwu, is said to represent the element of water, and its name is directly known as the "Black Military", as the word tortoise in China is something of a pejorative slur against orphans. Blastoise's and even Warturtle's name may be a literal take on being "military turtles of the element of water" in this sense.

Etymology[]

Blastoise comes from the words blast (referring to how its cannons blast out water) and tortoise.

Kamex (Kamekkusu in Romaji) probably mean kame (tortoise) and EX or max.

Names in other languages[]

  • French: "Tortank" comes from the combination of the words "tortue" (turtle) and "tank" (war tank).
