Wailord (ホエルオー, Hoeruoo?) (WAI-lord[1]) is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Wailord is a colossal, blue, whale-like Pokémon with small black eyes and a wide mouth filled with baleen-like teeth. It has a round, blimp-like body with two pairs of fins on either side and a small crescent-shaped tail fluke. Its underbelly is cream with vertical stripes running through it, while its back as a series of small white spots running down its length. Wailord is the second largest Pokémon after Eternatus.

Special abilities[]

Wailord can not only dive underwater for a long period of time no matter how steep the deepness of the water is, but they can also effortlessly spout pillars of water and even powerful beams.

Behavior[]

Wailord travel in pods across great expanses of the ocean. Despite ther immense sizes, they are surprisingly light, allowing them to float on water. They herd shoals of small prey into a ball and swallows them whole, with their favorite food being Wishiwashi.

These social Pokémon protect their own; if one member of a pod is attacked by a predator like Sharpedo or Dhelmise, the others will come to its aid and surround the attacker. When hunting, Wailord pods will leap out of the water, landing back down with humongous splashes to disorient prey and make capturing them in single gulps easy. They will also use this tactic to confuse foes. Though they must surface to breathe air every once in a while, they can dive as far as 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) with a single breath. They are slow swimmers, which unfortunately makes them targets for many poachers who value them for their uniquely airy blubber. If attacked, Wailord will jet water at opponents using Water Spout to knock them away.

Evolution[]

Wailord evolves from Wailmer starting at level 40.

Appearances[]

Core series[]

In Pokémon Ruby Version and Pokémon Sapphire Version, Pokémon Emerald Version, and their remakes Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, both a Wailord and a Relicanth are required to enter the Sealed Chamber.

Anime[]

Pokémon the Series[]

Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire[]
Robin's Wailord in "Island Time"

Robin's Wailord in "Island Time"

The first time that a Wailord appears in is in "Having a Wailord of a Time!". It is sick and washed ashore in Slateport City. The Team Rocket trio tries to steal the Wailord due to its large size and potential for promotion, but are thwarted by a Combusken. The Wailord recovers by the end of the episode.

In "Island Time", Robin owns a Wailmer, which evolves into a Wailord. It transports Ash and the other characters across the ocean and saves them from whirlpools.

Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl[]

In "Leading a Stray!", a pack of Wailords block the entrance to the ships, as they were waiting for a Wailmer that got lost in the sewers. Ash and the Pokémon living there help get out the Wailmer, which eventually evolves into a Wailord itself.

Pokémon the Series: Black & White[]

In "Piplup, Pansage and a Meeting of the Times!", Ash, Iris, and Cilan witness a pack of Waillord traveling to Undella Town.

In the following episode, "Expedition to Onix Island!", several more Wailord are encountered at a deserted island.

In "The Road to Humilau!", a Wailord belonging to Marlon helps Ash and Cameron to travel to the Humilau City Gym after both of them had been stranded in the forest.

Pokémon the Series: XY and XYZ[]

A Wailord appears in Pokémon the Series: XY and XYZ in as early as "Kalos, Where Dreams and Adventures Begin!", where it is one of the Pokémon seen swimming underwater.

In "Day Three Blockbusters!", a Wailord is seen in a flashback, where Trevor is seen catching it with a fishing rod.

Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon[]

In "So Long, Sophocles!", Lana and Sophocles witness a Wailord jumping out of the ocean during sunset.

In the "Where Are You Going, Eevee?" segment of "A Haunted House for Everyone!", a Wailord jumps out of the ocean, next to the ship carrying an Eevee, creating a big splash that causes some of the ship's cargo to fall into the sea, including the box Eevee is in.

In "Pikachu's Exciting Adventure!", a Wailord is one of the underwater Pokémon encountered by Ash's Pikachu and Ash's Lycanroc. It is where Ash's Meltan is trapped.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series[]

In "A Test in Paradise!", the Team Rocket trio received a Wailord from the Rocket Prize Master. The trio plans to use their Wailord against Ash and Goh on Dragonite Island so that they can steal all of the Pokémon living there. The Wailord only knows how to use Splash, in contrast to its intimidating appearance. The Wailord's use of Splash creates problems for the Team Rocket trio, because due to the Wailord's large size, a big wave is created that rocks the raft that they are on.

In "Looking Out for Number Two!", a Wailord uses Water Spout to launch Ash and Goh to the surface during their search of a Kingdra.

In "The Good, the Bad, and the Lucky!", a Wailord swallows the Team Rocket trio briefly, but they manage to escape when their Pelipper uses Hydro Pump.

In "Ride, Lapras, Ride!", when a trapped Wailmer is rescued on a stranded island by Ash and his friends, it evolves into Wailord, only to become stuck again. The Wailord is eventually freed with the help of the Team Rocket trio and the other wild Pokémon inhabiting the island.

Films[]

A Wailord appears only in the intro in a few films, MS007: Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys, MS013: Pokémon—Zoroark: Master of Illusions, and MS017: Pokémon the Movie: Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction. On the other hand, in MS020: Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You!, a Wailord appears in the ending.

The most major role of Wailords in a film is MS009: Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea, where several of them appear. At one point, Manaphy is seen riding one on the sea. Wailords are later amongst the Water-type Pokémon who attack The Phantom's ship in a face off against him.

Shorts[]

In "Pikachu's Summer Festival", a Wailord rides the Pokémon across the ocean to the festival.

In "Pikachu's Ice Adventure", both Pikachu's and Meowth's groups accidentally fall onto a Wailord as a result of Piplup using Whirlpool.

In "Pikachu, What's This Key?", a Wailord launches Meowth, Wobbuffet, and Inkay into the sky using Water Spout.

Pokémon: Twilight Wings[]

In "TW008: The Gathering of Stars," a Wailord appears in the sea.

Project Voltage[]

A Wailord and a Wailmer both appear at sea in a part of the "Kimi to sora o tobu" video, and during the intro of "After Epochs."

Pokémon Concierge[]

In "PC004: Welcome to the Pokémon Resort!," a Wailmer arrives as a new member of the Pokémon Resort.

Manga[]

In "Stick This in Your Craw, Crawdaunt! I", there is a Wailord named Lorry that Birch uses for maritime research, but he passed it on to his daughter, Sapphire, to allow her to travel across the water. Lorry is the only Wailord to appear during the Ruby & Sapphire Chapter.

In "Pink Slip", two Wailord are among the Pokémon to swim around the Marine Tube. This is the only appearance of Wailord in the Black 2 & White 2 Chapter.

In "Salamence Evolves", a Wailord is shown during a flashback of Lisia's, where Ruby climbs atop the Wailord. This is Wailord's only appearance in the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire Chapter.

In "SWSH040", a Wailord is one of the Pokémon affected by Dynamax as a result of the Darkest Day event. This is Wailord's only appearance in the Sword & Shield Chapter.

Trivia[]

  • Wailord has the highest amount of HP compared to any other Water-type Pokémon.
  • Despite Wailord being huge, it appears smaller once the player obtains it.
  • Wailord is the second longest non-dynamax of all Pokémon, behind Eternatus, but is still the longest Water-type Pokémon.
  • Interestingly, Wailord is only indirectly mentioned in its Pokedex entry for Pokémon Ultra Moon, in the sense that the whole pod of a Wailmer works together to protect it from danger.
  • Despite its immense girth, Wailord is notoriously light for its size, at only 398 kg. This would in fact make it less dense than air.
  • Despite being the second longest Pokémon being at 47'07", real life blue whales (the animal Wailord is based on) can grow to over 100 feet long.

Origin[]

Wailord is based on a blue whale, though also has some physical similarities evocative of a submarine or blimp.

Etymology[]

Wailord's name derives from whale and lord, a reference to its size.
